Not sure if this is a new site or how accurate it is, but it’s pretty easy to read and to look at.
Covid tracker

So from this new tracker, you can see that hospitalizations bottomed out June 15 (post-reopening). Since then, tests and cases have not quite doubled yet, but hospitalizations have slightly more than doubled. The trend is not our friend.
Glad to see DCH numbers trending down slightly in all categories. They've got a little more than 2 weeks to get shite straight before big numbers of students start coming back for rush, band, camp 1831, etc.
AND my daughter's new roommate to be just got tested for the shite because she has a fever, sniffles and a negative strep test. frick!

I hope that girl is ok. I sure wish you could convince your daughter to sit out a semester or two.

Dude, you have no idea how bad I've tried. I guess at the end of the day, I could be the a-hole parent and say, I'm writing the checks, you're staying home for a year. I've never had a problem playing bad cop to mom's good cop, but she's an adult now. It's her life, her call. I've laid it all out for her and told her all the reasons I (and her mother) think she should. And she's heard me preach about how silly I've always thought gap years to be. But that was before a pandemic. It's never made more sense than in 2020. I even went to the lengths to find out how she could keep her presidential till next year. She's not going for it.

FHSAA’s medical advisors told them they should postpone fall sports, specifically football and volleyball. They deemed swimming, golf, and cross country safe. But FHSAA didn’t listen and voted to proceed with all fall sports against advice. Fans, band, etc will be up to the local authorities as will masks. Unbelievable!!

Football will be played, purely because of the money. I’ll be honest, that makes me sick. I want things to go back to normal, but it should be normal for everyone and not just normal for athletes that bring in the money
Posted on 7/20/20 at 10:44 pm to Cobrasize
They will attempt to play football. They being the NFL, certain HS, colleges. But there’s absolutely no guarantee they will actually complete a season. All it takes is a bunch of players and coaches testing positive after one game.

You’re right. I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t play, I just think if the football players have to be there, then so should the regular students. It just makes me sick to think that we would force the football players to do something that we don’t force the other kids to do.

Well they don't have to be there. At least high school kids. They aren't going to get expelled if they don't play or anything. I'm sure that the possibility of costing a lot of rising seniors scholarship opportunities is playing a role in the decision, but I do agree that it's a load of crap that having 22 kids pile up fighting over a loose ball is A-OK but having 22 kids sitting in a classroom with masks on is practically murder.

Force football players to do something? You really think anyone is forcing them to play football. Geez. Plus, Im pretty sure the SEC commissioner has already said none of the athletes will not be required to play this year. I know the North Carolina coach has already addressed that publicly. He said any football player that doesnt feel safe to play can take the semester off and rejoin the team in January, no questions asked. Plus he said they will still be on scholarship and can go to classes like all the other players. So quit being "sick" about it.

The big question then is will sounder minds win out. ESPN has to be chopping at the bit to get football going. In the south, the game is always at a fever pitch. I fully expect the SEC to be the last conference making the ultimate decision about sports.
In contrast, the federal government in Canada told the Bluejays they can't play baseball in Toronto. They didn't want traveling teams from our hotspots to start infecting the masses. Nor did they think it wise to allow their team to travel to the same hotspots and then mix and mingle with the populace.
That's being proactive and explains what leadership with a conscience does in a crisis. But this is not something new for Toronto or Canada. They've had a gameplan up there from the get-go.
The NHL is holding their playoffs in Canada. When Las Vegas spiked recently with their COVID-19 numbers Edmonton and Toronto became their "bubble" site. No traveling, no hotspots, just hockey playoffs.

The president of Ky will probably have a big say in this. He is a masters in Epidemiology and a PHD in some other medical area. He is also the president of the SEC presidents. He said the other day that we basically have 2 choices in the covid 19 world we live in. Either we lock ourselves up, or we learn to live in this world with the virus. The KY athletic dept, including all athletes, coaches, etc currently have one positive case. The SEC commissioner said positive cases are very low at the SEC schools. These athletes are living in a lot better environment than we are.

We aren't even sure this pandemic has flexed its muscles yet. Each day that goes by, business, as usual, is a harder sell.

My youngest has chosen to stay home this semester and take her high school classes virtually as was offered. The reason: she doesn’t feel safe after seeing the plan our school proposed. Also after seeing some of the half-assed implementation for some events like graduation, she said no way!
The students are to wear masks when reporting to school, in the hallways, cafeteria, and all other common areas. They are to wear masks into the classroom. But once inside the classroom, if the teacher feels social distancing is maintained, he/she can let the students remove their masks.
I feel for the teachers; they didn’t sign up for this. I also know there is no way they can enforce proper mask usage all the time, especially as the kids they teach get younger and this is a K thru 12 school all on the same campus. I don’t even know the requirements for the elementary section since I don’t have a child there but I can’t imagine the difficulty of any sort of plan there.
FHSAA approved fall sports yesterday against the recommendation of their medical advisors. They plan on having the participants sign a liability waiver. Some areas in south Florida around the hot spot of Miami is trying to opt out of fall sports due to their status. They know it’s not safe. FHSAA has been told it’s not safe. But instead of doing the adult thing and saying we can’t play right now, they shift the onus to the kids and the adults. You can play even though we know it’s not safe, but you can’t sue us if something happens to you.
It’s a tough choice to make I know, but it’s the right choice for the overwhelming majority that sports be postponed. Keep an open mind and be flexible and think outside the box for maybe a winter or early spring abbreviated season here in the south but to play now as if nothing is wrong is criminal in my opinion. I know some of you will disagree.

Homeschooling is the way we see it for our grandkids. These teachers desperately need secular options. Going to be older teachers with plenty of ongoing health issues. What's the gameplan when they get sick? If any teacher wants to teach remotely, will they still have jobs? I'm still wondering who actually shows up for in-person classes.
These are hard times and teachers I'm sure are feeling the economic pressure to teach. But they also have a union. Let's hope they can move with some sort of unity of thought of how it needs to get done this year. Might end up making family decisions a lot easier.

I mean, I guess I understand being afraid, but unless she has significant underlying health conditions, the IFR for her age group is comparable to that of the common flu. She's far more likely to die in a traffic accident going to or from school than from COVID-19.

She’s 14. The prospect of a potentially deadly disease is a little bit frightening to her. But I think she’s more scared of bringing it home to her parents or grandparents or friends or something. She did pretty well finishing up spring virtually and I think she likes it. It’s the best of both worlds for her. And if they end up shutting down schools due to a spike or something, she’s already in the groove of virtual. It’s not the best choice for everyone but I think it’s the best one for her so we agreed.

If you have to "guess" you understand being "afraid," you aren't "afraid" enough and I doubt seriously you get it. Nothing is a sure thing about the ongoing strength of this virus or longevity. A pandemic doesn't need willing human sacrifices to feed its count, it's proficient enough when we are most careful.
This doesn't honestly require an intellectual exercise to get this, just a value system.

Friend of mine's daughter got it. She is 25 and has no symptoms. She ended up passing it on to her parents. One on a ventilator and one just isolated in the hospital.
Believe what you want. Over 500 deaths in Alabama alone since 6/17.
