That's surprising

.... to who? I pointed out he is definitely on the transfer bubble weeks ago LINK

Murray was a 30min/game, 35% usage (#7 natl) guy who averaged 20+ppg 10+rpg at Presbyterian. As Chuma Okeke's role expanded + Purifoy became eligible, Murray's already reduced role (20mpg 19% usage last season pre injuries) was going to shrink even more

I absolutely loved Desean Murray. He was fascinating to watch, he was a great teammate, accepted his role and never complained about his sacrifice in role/minutes. He has the cahnce to try and be the star/primary option for a good midmajor / low middle P5, he 100% should take it and I'll root for him

Bruce is gonna have to be hitting the Juco/Grad transfer market heavy. Auburn getting real thin.

Auburn is getting really thin. You're at 9 total scholarship players, and that's if Wiley stays and Akingbola reclassifies. Something to watch, at least.

I just figured he came to Auburn to compete at the highest level, and he played a large role for a winning team. If he was worried about usage and PT, why ever leave Presbyterian?

Not really, even if we lose Austin Wiley, AU's 8 returning players are comfortably 2 deep with 7 guys who have avg 20+mpg in a season

If AU grabbed just one grad transfer PG we would be 3 deep at every position in terms of competent options and wouldn't be murdered by injuries

Then AU probably gets Austin Wiley back plus adds reclassified Pf/C Akingbola to have 10 scholarship players possible 11 w grad transfer

I may have graduated from AU but my fingers count me to 10 scholarship players....

Posted this in another AU thread. Every player on the 1/2 has experience at that position and avg 20+mpg in D1

I'd call that the opposite of thin

The bigger concern: Injury risk, not rotation depth

We should be able to easily absorb the loss of Murray from a rotation standpoint. We easily will have multiple players for every position

The problem will become our growing risk of injuries derailing the team.

Weirdly, I think the solution is actually to bring in a grad transfer PG. By doing this, we are 3 deep at every position with players comfortable at that position

PG- Harper/ GT PG / Doughty [/b]
SG- Brown / Doughty / Purifoy / Dunbar
SF- Purifoy / Dunbar / Doughty
PF- Okeke/ Purifoy / Spencer or McLemore
C - McLemore / Spencer / Okeke

You're right; I forgot about Doughty.

Even with just 8-9 guys, AU wouldn't have in game depth issues due to the experience + positional flexibility of multiple players. Not only is dropoff from 1 to 2 minimal, every position has multiple player experienced in that role

AU will have injury risk though, even if both Wiley/Akingbola are on roster. If Jared Harper goes down, Samir Doughty would be PG w no great backup option. It also would put more pressure on oft inconsistent Malik Dunbar to backup both SG/SF. If AU adds a grad transfer PG that solves that

AU is set at the wing and should be good in the post as is. If you add Akingbola/Wiley we have 6 post players if you include Purifoy who started at the 4 his FR year

What happens if Harper decides to stay in the Draft and go the G-League route??

Harper at this time has no intention of leaving early to pursue a G League/overseas career

I would expect Bryce Brown to also "declare" and not sign an agent as well. Surprised he hadn't already

Auburn is encouraging our players to go through the process and get feedback.

That will be the big problem for au. If Harper decides to go make money somewhere playing bball- which is very possible.

Of course it is possible, but so is Harper quitting basketball tomorrow

To people in the know, Harper leaving AU without a RD1 NBA grade would be absolutely shocking

None of AUs confirmed departures have been surprising. I'd also expect Bryce Brown to declare with no agent

The only wildcard is Wiley and what he believes is high enough in draft to go pro

Like rats off a sinking ship at this point. I wonder if they know something.

Here is how I see the AU situation...
I think Harper is likely to return...I would expect Brown to return but he seems like the type that is gone if he gets a good word. And I would be shocked if Wiley came back to AU...he is going to test out of this world.

I think Wiley is gone, and Harper goes somewhere to play for money. Brown probably returns.

Man...AU had a legit Final 4 caliber team if everyone came back. I would be pissed the frick off if I was a fan.

No they didn't. They only went .500 against tournament teams this past year. Unless they got a bracket similar to Michigan's, they wouldn't have sniffed the final four even with everyone back.
