In case someone missed it.... Future is bright for present Alabama team

quote:

In the fourth season under Grant, Alabama has won 20 games for a third consecutive year for the first time since 1990-92, when Wimp Sanderson was the coach.

This is why Grant's seat is not even warm, imo.

quote:

Former Alabama coach C.M. Newton thinks the state of the program is solid. “This team is probably lacking an inside player or two,” he said. “If the big kid from Sweden hadn’t gotten hurt, I’d really like to see how they would’ve progressed.

quote:

“They’ve had the injury, and (Nick) Jacobs has got to play the way he’s been playing,” Sanderson said, referring to the sophomore forward. “If he’ll do that – the injury hurt them a lot. The Jacobs kid is a good player. He’s just got to go a little harder, the way Coach wants him to go. He’s a gifted kid.”

quote:

Engstrom is one of three foreign players among Alabama’s 10 players on scholarship.

quote:

Could Johnson’s teams from the mid-80’s have beaten this Alabama team? “I think we, on the inside, had the advantage,” he said. :That’s what we’re missing this year on this team is somebody that we can throw that ball into on the inside and get a basket when we need one. We’ve had that for years and years and years. We had somebody that you could count on inside to get buckets. That’s what we’re missing. I think we’d beat them on the inside.”

All the guys say the same thing basically, need more talent, depth and a couple of inside guys. There has obviously been some missteps along the way for Grant and his roster management and recruiting. Hopefully he is learning and improving while getting those things in better shape.

ETA: Buck was being nice in his comments, his teams would crush this current Bama team ten times out of ten. Johnson made it to at least the SEC title game three of his four years.
His firtst couple of years he had guys like Mike Davis, Whatley, Bobby Lee Hurt and Terry Williams. His last couple of years the front line was Hurt, Johnson, and McKey with Terry Coner, Gottfried, Farmer and JJ Jackson on the outside. That frontline would brutalize this current team.

The '85 and '86 teams were two of the best Bama has ever put on the court. Just a bit unlucky when it came tourney time. One year, had the misfortune of running into a Worthy/Jordan/Perkins UNC team and lost by five or six. The other year was the year they had to play UK four times. UK matched up well and beat them once again in NCAA tourney. NCAA committee messed up that year by putting too many SEC teams in one bracket. I think they had four in one, along with UK facing Bama for the fourth time in the second round.

Well, that's on Grant. He can't use that as an excuse when it's his own fault.

I'm not a Grant hater though.

I agree, I'm not a fan of his recruiting philosophy so far. One area that puzzles me is the lack of JC recruiting, especially with the short numbers and the short term needs it can address.

Will the tourney be streamed anywhere online?

So what do you guys think we need to do this weekend to get an NCAAt bid? Obviously other things will take place around the country that will affect our odds, but what do you think is the minimum we must do? For me, I think it's beat Tennessee and Florida, but depending on what else happens nationally that may not be enough IMO. I think we have to win the whole thing. Some discussion on the SECr got me thinking and maybe wins over UT and UF would be enough, but I'm going to be cheering for MSU and UGA/LSU because the only way I'll have any confidence Sunday evening is if we have an auto-bid.

I know I'll be rooting for MSU and UGA (if not, LSU). I'd like our chances of having to play a couple decent games and one good game (championship game in that scenario) compared to the 1 or 2 good games and 1 great game that we'd need to play to make it into the NCAAT if UF and UT won. Having said that there is a 99.5% chance of neither team advancing.

If UF does win, I'd rather UT beat MSU. That way if we do beat UF we at least have a shot of making the NCAAT with the UT and UF wins.

That Johnny Oneal can play ball IMO. Love the way they play through him.

We gotta beat UT just because their posters suck.

No lie, that was my thought as I read their thread today. Screw the tournament, I just want to see their mouthbreathing fans cry

Me: I realize UT is going on a hot streak and expected their odds to be higher even with us getting the bye, but is there seriously that much of a difference between these 2 teams?

Jarnell Stokes on the inside

Yeaaaaa....

I'm watching this Miami-BC game and they showed Virginia getting off the bus for the next game against NC State. And then it hit me, if we win today I'm going to have to cheer for Gottfried

Didn't see the game. Saw the score. How much did Florida's starters even play? They are going to be fresh tomorrow.

I didn't get any sleep last night so I power-napped through that game. All I saw was the last 4 minutes and none of the starters were playing and it was a 25 point game. Can't imagine many of the starters playing much after the 10 minute mark of the 2nd half.

Great gameplan and execution today. Everyone but Lacey played great. Retin deserves even more minutes!!

Definitely a great game. Certainly the most complete performance I can remember in a while and for this stage, its gotta be great for the teams confidence.

Retin has been killing it for the last month or so. Its nice to see a youngster with that competitive spirit. I know its been a rough road, but I really love this team!!!
