Until he says something negative about the staff, I’m going to assume he wasn’t forced out and this was a conclusion he came to on his own and our staff will be gracious and release him from his NLI.

That is by far the best case scenario.

I think you'd have to be pretty naive to think he just decided on his own to leave.

I don't know specifics of what he was promised, or how much nudging he got. But, it's no secret we over-signed. I'm not mad, but it sucks for the guy. He was clearly excited to play for Bama and heartbroken that he's not going to. I do think the wrong guy is leaving.

Alabama and Auburn will in all likelihood both be in the majority of Top 25s, maybe even top 15s.

When was the last time Alabama and Auburn were both ranked in the preseason?

EDIT - Looks like it was 1986-1987

#12 - Auburn
#13 - Alabama

No chance it’s happened in the 2000s, right? Did Auburn have many good seasons during the Wimp era?

I thought maybe that year after they went to the Elite 8 (2003?), but neither of us were ranked.

They had some good teams in the 80s with Sonny. Went to 5 straight NCAAT from 1984-1988.

Sucks to lose Wilson but he did say HE is asking to be removed from his LOI after talking to his coaches and family. Does seem like he wanted to come here but maybe with the two recent additions he saw that his chance at getting playing time had diminished.

I am very stoked to get Gurley however. I feel a lot better going into next year with a proven Forward then having to roll the dice and hope that one of our guys with no experience pans out quickly.

Auburn got Walker Kessler from North Carolina. Ouch.

They can get it, too.

Dude wants to play run and gun and hasn’t proven he can do that. Let him get mismatched on our guards and his tounge will hit the floor from being worked.

Am I the only one who thinks Bediako is gonna be great from day 1? In a 5 out offense, a rangy center who can run the floor and bang down low better than Reese and post injury Bruner will be a huge advantage in March. If we’re playing a team with slower bigs(typically big ten and big east teams)they won’t be able to run with Bediako in the open court in transition. He’ll be our version of Clint Capela

I think he's interesting from day 1. Just hard to gauge how quickly guys who aren't Top 10 lottery pick types will show up, pick things up and be able to deal with the pace and physicality.

I could absolutely see this, though. Same with Frency (if he's totally healthy).

Our roster has the potential to be so versatile that it could really be huge in tournament play.

I hate to see things end like that for Langston. He did everything you could ask of a committed player... interacted with other recruits, promoted the football and basketball programs on Twitter, and genuinely seemed like a class act. I hope it was truly his decision, but I can’t find anything that points to him having a change of heart or lack of excitement about his future in the program.

At the end of the day, it’s big time athletics, and I guess this is part of the game, but I hate to see a kid work that hard and have things go the wrong way for him.

All that being say, he’s extremely gifted athletically, he has a tremendous amount of talent for someone with limited organized basketball experience, and he has plenty of high level suitors, even this late in the process. He seems like a great kid and I hope he finds success in a spot that suits him and allows to grow into the player we expected.

ETA: Don’t take this as any kind of condemnation of the staff. We might learn a little more about the situation in a few weeks and I’m not implying anything shady went down. Just expressing a little regret for the kid in this situation.

I think he is gonna be good from day 1, but even if he isn't I don't think it will take him very long to acclimate. He is a borderline 5 star for a reason. Not sure what the people who seemed unexcited about him are smoking, probably some of that Lee County meth. At the worst he is gonna be a rebounding/shot blocking machine.

IMHO, Oats sat Wilson down and told him minutes would be hard to come by next year for him because of more developed guys in front of him. Probably told him he could stay but he would either be redshirted (if he hasn’t already used it) or he’d be a benchwarmer until garbage time. Left the decision up to Wilson, and the kid decided to try to do what is best for him and his future. You can’t be mad at him for that and he’s taken the high road so far. Good luck to him.

Read a Gurley interview and he said we recruited him to play the 4. He could play the 5 when we go smaller of course.

quote:

“They said they want to use me as a stretch four, play in the pick and pop, attacking in transition, finding others and just playing together with their team.

Probably so.

I didn't realise til I saw it tonight that Wilson is 21, that's pretty old to have only played two years of organized basketball. Herb and Petty are 22.

It should also stated that while these difficult situations arise from time to time despite everyone’s best efforts, no coach in Tuscaloosa should make this a recurring habit. It’s not a good look for anyone and will certainly be used against you by rival programs. And it’s just not the right thing to do.
