Don’t even know who is going to be on the roster.

I was just going by the roster in the OP of this thread …

Just read that Coleman Mizell was coming home due to a reported back injury. I looked at the Falmouth roster and he’s no longer listed.
Earlier speculation was Lebron may have “tweaked something” and decided to shut it down for the summer too. It’s hard for me to closely follow summer ball with players scattered everywhere - supposedly Lebron got picked off trying to steal second base, came out of the game and sat the next two games before the announcement below.

Of all the players who portalled out of large D 1 programs like UT etc and Bama gets none of them. We get from smaller schools like Samford. What do you people who follow baseball religiously think is the reason for Bama not getting those type. Is it a weak NIL budget for baseball.

Has to be that IMO. Been saying that since Day 1… not one P4 transfer for us. We get guys we are hoping are “Diamond in the Roughs” . Found some last year but we desperately need weekend pitching and unless some of these guys who barely pitched at all this year make a huge jump, I fear the worst

How many legitimate starters are leaving P4 schools?
I know theres some, but it’s not like the top two players on every SEC team were portalling.
We got Torres from Miami last year. Was pretty meh.
I know we got a tall pitcher from Texas in 2024 who stunk.
The CF from Ole Miss worked out in 2023.
I really don’t care about getting sloppy seconds from other P4 schools.

Some of them may have been back ups to upper classmen. I would not say they are sloppy seconds

1. Which players specifically are you referring to?
2. We are not in the same stratosphere of baseball NIL as many of the top programs.

A number of players left Tenn and UGA for instance. I dont know where they went. The only portal players we get are from mid majors so far. So my question is it because of our NIL funds not being competitive?

I think LSU is getting one of the UT pitchers.

Generally speaking, accomplished P4 guys are too pricey for us.
I also don’t think simply being on a P4 roster means that much. We’ve had a lot of guys transfer, and most of them barely played if at all. That is the case for many of these P4 transfers from other places too.

Agreed. I don’t know why some of our fans would rather build a roster with LSU and Arkansas backups, like that’s a solution.
The mid-majors in some of the regionals and super regionals were not fricking around this year.

Not saying every kid has to be a P4 player . But if they were at LSU or ARKY out of HS, then they have the talent /potential to be an impact player vs a kid from SW Connecticut State in most cases . So far , out of the portal pitchers from UT, one is going to LSU and one is going to UGA. We need to be in on those types . Tennessee just got their probable Friday night starter from a portal guy from Rutgers . There is plenty of talent to be had

You gotta stop comparing us to Tennessee and LSU. The commitment is not the same.
We have a former LSU guy in our starting lineup. He actually played there. And he’s far from an All-Star for us. Them being signed by SEC teams doesn’t mean much. Too much development still takes place between 18-21.

That my point. We are not committed enough for baseball and there is no reason for it .

If they are signed by an SEC team out of HS ( Bama included ) chances are you were a National recruit . More times than not, they are probably more talented than a kid whose best offer was Ball State. Look, I love baseball and want Bama to be the best it can possibly be . It’s just frustrating seeing other teams sign the top pitchers out of the portal and we should be able to offer guaranteed roles especially if we lose Adams and Fay too

I’m unconvinced that guys who can’t get significant PT at SEC schools and transfer are automatically better than guys who have played college baseball at the D1 mid major level and proven something.

“More times than not” is not the same as “ automatically “
It’s not 100%. There are many players who fall through the cracks or develop later than others . I hope our guys work out . Is there another portal window for baseball ? Someone had mentioned we would need 6 or 7 more to transfer to get to the roster limit but the portal closes today I think .
ETA - my main point was referring to pitchers also. I have had many conversations with college coaches over the years in coaching and know what they want out of a HS pitcher . They may miss on some but if a kid goes to an SEC school out of HS, he is usually a very polished prospect
ETA2- not really comparing us to anybody in particular but we ARE a top 25 team and historically a good program so I do expect us to go head to head with SEC schools for recruits
