Houston, Duke and UF all won their conference tournaments last year and played in the final four. These are college kids who are playing 3 games over a 3 day stretch in most cases and then get 4 days of rest. I have yet to see hard evidence that winning conference tournaments has any real ill impact on quality teams

The only #1 seeds to lose their opening round game in the history of the NCAAT both won their conference tournaments (and both were double champions winning the regular season and conference tournaments).

Well considering most one seeds win their conference tournament the odds were pretty high of that. But beyond that, I will gladly take conference tournament Champions and you take the field each year and history says the results would be very lopsided

According to Gemini, since the tourney expanded to 68 teams in 2011, 33 of 56 #1 seeds won their conference tournaments (ie. only 59%).
Your statement is somewhat biased as clearly the top 1 or 2 teams each year typically are able to run through their conference tournaments, especially in a weak conference (see Duke’s ACC win last year…the ACC was historically bad). We are not the top 2 teams in the country with a relatively easy path to win our conference tournament. So the theory of it being better to rest than playing 3 games in 3 days and follow that up with 2 games in 3 days the next weekend still holds. As I’ve said, blue blood fans have been saying this for years.

Logically I would rather lose on Friday and give Philon extra rest…but the SEC tournament is fun. 21 and 23 were so exciting . The Title game vs LSU is one of my favorite games of the Oats era

If we have a chance to win (ie FL is upset before Sunday), then I agree. But I’m more worried about Sherrell’s health trying to play as much as we’d need him to in order to win…3 days in a row.
Us playing FL on Sunday with Sherrell playing his 3rd straight game in 3 days seems like a recipe for something bad to happen.
ETA: give me a healthy and rested Sherrell ready to play 30+ minutes in the first weekend of the NCAAT instead

There is never a guarantee that a player won’t get hurt in practice.
Play to win!

Surely you see the difference in having your only serviceable big man practice vs. playing 30+ minutes 3 games in a row while playing a tempo that is ranked 4th out of over 330 teams, right?

Probably the most disappointing thing about tonight’s loss is we are getting some of the help we needed for the 3 seed. TT lost at home to TCU, Kansas was down double digits on the road to ASU (still early), and Nebraska is a small underdog on the road to UCLA tonight.
Winning 12 SEC games in a row was too much to ask for this team though. Glad to be in a good position to get a top 4 seed again.

You think we beat Az in a rematch? And UConn is one of the best rebounding teams in the country…would probably be a disaster for us.
Az, Duke, UConn, Michigan would run this squad out of the gym.

Not trying to argue, just a difference of opinions. Oats’ practices are generally tough and up tempo. I have seen players turn an ankle in walk throughs and even pre game warmups. These are college athletes who will in some cases soon be playing an 82 game schedule. Manage minutes but let them play and play to win.

I hear you, but Oats is managing practices for health/injuries now as well. He indicated we didn’t practice on Sunday and only a light practice yesterday due to the turnaround. Very different than playing 3 consecutive games.

Do gotta give UGA some credit. We got hot offensively with about 6 mins left and every time they would come down and make a tough contested 3 against pretty good defense to answer our score.
Frustrating but it is what it is

No guarantee that we play three in a row.
Ultimately, it is up to Nate to make the call.
