Is it possible for Bama to switch their base D to a 4-3 or even a 4-2-5?

It might help solve our dilemma at LB. Could free up Payne to make more plays. Would confuse the shite out of AU.

Also, does anybody know if Chris Allen can play Mike or Will LB? Need to find some more bodies in the middle and Allen seems like a guy who isn't afraid to stick his nose in there and hit somebody. Disappointed McMillon didn't get any PT in the middle last week.

We haven't recruited 4-3 defensive ends in quite some time. Changing the scheme doesn't change the player type.

4-2-5

This is exactly what we look like when we run Nickle, except that it's really a 3-3-5 with Jack on the LOS.

Simply put, there are lots of things that we can and will do to put our defensive players in the best position for success. Changing to a true 4-man front, and thereby literally changing everything we've taught our Dline since they got to campus, ain't it.

I agree that we need to manufacture some depth at ILB, but we just held MissSt to their worst rushing output of the season by a wide margin. And so why is the sky falling at LB for a large part of our fanbase?

Because Holcombe.

I'm generally a sunshine pumper and I don't like to call out individual players for poor play. But he was not getting it done at the level Bama defense is accustomed to; not even close.

It's gonna be hard to beat power running teams like Auburn and Georgia if we don't have a plug in the middle of the defense. Losing SDH was a huge blow.

That still keeps the same personnel on the field. SAM stays on field, Evans still the WILL, and Holcombe still the MIKE.

Holcombe is at the center of the defense, better or worse. No one healthy knows the defense better...

But to keep in perpective our defensive staff should have adjusted to them using there offensive guard to kick the D-linemen outside and the tackle pulling around. When you play the 3-4 that wide you are asking for the guards/tackle's to be able to get to your lb'ers.
MSU saw our splits that wide and took advantage of his 42 being under size and slower that a SDH.
If you go back and look at all the plays we went 4 man fronts.
They were for minimal yardage.
I don't know why they were no told to read that and shoot the gap before the tackle got around.
They went out they way to show davis or 94 being hit inside from the guard with the tackle puling
around getting up field 3-4yards engaging the LB'er.
Note the distance between 94 and 99.

A 4-3 or 5-2 solves that and eliminate the pulling.
If they pull the d-line is in there back-filed and it creates one on one.Now I don't know why we would not want to create one on one for Davis and 94 by being in a 4-3.Especially when we are banged up at inside lb'er.
In the 5-2 we have 33 and 32 inside with 89, 92, 9, 49 as the DE's. with 69 and 49 alternating as the DT's.We can be 6 to 7 deep at D-line and should have used that to protect our LB'ers. There times when our coaches just get out coached.

Going to a base 4-3 seems like a no-brainer at this point. Not sure why it hasn't already been done. Put Payne and Davis inside and Buggs and Hand outside. Rotate Q. Williams, Ray, Frazier and Dwight to keep them fresh. Jennings at OLB with and Evans mans the middle with Ronnie Harrison coming up to help in support. That seems like a hell of a lot better solution than playing a slow, undersized LB who's getting smoked every play.

We still don't have the personnel to run a 4-3. Buggs and Hand absolutely are not ends for that system. You would need Anfernee Jennings at one end and I have no idea who would be cut out for the other end. Buggs and Hand would be tackles in a 4-3. We can't and won't abandon our system because of these injuries. It sucks and it is unfortunate but we are already struggling. If we attempted to switch to a 4-3 we would only struggle even more. Guys are just gonna have to grab their sack and step up if they want a ring this year.

Buggs or Hand could play SDE with no problem.

It wouldnt make sense to totally switch to a 43 full time. But i do think it would make sense to mix in a couple 43 packages with the LB depth the way it is now.
