Best in Class: Recruits explain why Alabama was No. 1 yet again (247Sports | incl. video)
quote:

Nick Saban opened his National Signing Day press conference with the idea of team recruiting. He spoke about his assistant coaches, the administration and even the University facility and how they shape official visits.

It’s a nice message, and in many ways it’s true. But it’s also a deflection of praise. Crimson Tide signees will tell you the No. 1 reason they’re heading to Alabama is its 67-year-old head coach.

“I feel as long as Coach Saban is there, I’m going to be taken care of,” four-star corner Brandon Turnage told 247Sports. “He’s going to bring in the best and have us coached by the best. You’ve got to just trust him.”

Turnage speaks about trust following a three-year Crimson Tide recruitment that included a trio of primary recruiters. Almost every member of Alabama’s No. 1 overall 2019 class saw their primary recruiter shift at least once. Alabama added six new assistants following the 2017 season, and the Tide lost both of their coordinators this offseason for the second time in three years.

Alabama did not grant assistant coaching interviews for this “Best in Class” story, per Saban’s policy. Perhaps that’s appropriate. This is truly Saban’s class in the end. “It’s just people wanting to play for Nick Saban and wanting to be around the best of the best,” four-star defensive tackle Byron Young said.

Alabama’s 2019 haul put the Tide on top for the eighth time in nine seasons, bouncing back from a sub-par 2018 class (by Alabama standards) when it finished fifth in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. Twenty-six of Alabama’s 27 signees this cycle ranked as four-star prospects or better. The only player who didn’t, Will Reichard, ranked as the No. 1 overall kicker.

DeMatha Catholic (Md.) safety DeMarcco Hellams said it’s an easy explanation as to why so many high-profile players pick the Tide. “The factory of producing great NFL players who have great NFL careers, the opportunity to be coached by the greatest coach in college football history and the opportunity to play in the toughest conference in the country,” Hellams said.

Any time a No. 1 class comes together competition is a key unifier, and this group isn’t any different. Turnage said nothing is promised at Alabama. You’re not guaranteed playing time. You’re not guaranteed a special teams spot. Competition, Top247 athlete vs. Top247 athlete, occurs across the board.

Finding athletes who embrace the idea of iron sharpening iron is the annual key to Alabama’s top-ranked classes. But it all comes back to Saban at the end of the day.

Hellams vividly remembers his first visit with Saban. It’s the moment he arrived. “It means you’re the real deal,” Hellams said with a laugh. “Great college coaches don’t waste valuable recruiting time on guys they’re not sure of. Sitting and talking with Coach Saban made me hungrier. It makes me push harder so I know when I’m under a coach like that I get everything I possibly can from him.”

Turnage didn’t care about his assistant coach’s nametag much in recruiting, because he knows Saban will be at Alabama. In much the same way the Crimson Tide are an NFL factory, the program’s turned into similar feeder program for coaches: “It’s a pit stop,” Turnage said.

The one constant is Saban.

Turnage is quick to point out there’s another constant – winning. Alabama’s won 10-plus games for 11 years running, earning five national championships in that stretch. A juggernaut in recruiting and on the field, the Tide are college football’s premier program. It’s why four and five-star recruits flock to Alabama year after year.

“Who wants to lose?” Turnage said.

In-state battle for top player in Alabama? (BamaOnLine-VIP)
quote:

247Sports recently named 4-star OLB Quandarrius Robinson the top player in Alabama... backed off his commitment to AU following a visit to UA. He’s since returned to Bama and is a “maybe” to visit the Tide’s first spring practice... “At Auburn...family culture. At Bama...more business-oriented... It doesn’t matter. I can fit in at both... Coach Sunseri is a comedian. We have a good relationship. Part of my family...Auburn. Part of them...Alabama.” (hudl)

I expect Thai-Jones to commit soon. I’m excited about this WR class. Lots of different types of receivers were in on, and a lot of good ones.

Status unclear for second-year Alabama LB

Alabama’s inside linebacker group will be without one of its most promising players for at least the time being.

Sophomore Ale Kaho wasn’t at the Crimson Tide’s practice on Friday and it’s unclear when or if he’ll be return to practice with the team.

“He’s got some issues that he’s dealing with," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "We’re trying to be supportive of him every way that we can. I think that we’ll just continue to try to help him every way that we can. I don’t know if at some point in time he’ll be ready to come back and play football or not.”

Kaho was expected to challenge for the Tide’s starting inside linebacker job next to Dylan Moses.

The former four-star recruit had a team-high seven tackles on the kickoff coverage team last season.

Elite 2021 QB sets Alabama visit for this month (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Jake Garcia

Alabama will have a number of high-profile visitors on campus throughout the weeks to come.

The weekend of March 22-24 appears to be one of the more significant visitor weekends for the Crimson Tide with several visitors already confirmed to be on campus like four-star receiver Thaiu Jones-Bell, four-star defensive lineman Braiden McGregor, and the Fast Houston 7on7 team (4* CB Dwight McGlothern) to name a few.

You can add 2021 four-star quarterback Jake Garcia to the list as the Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne product plans to visit the Capstone on March 24, his coach confirms to BamaOnLine.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Garcia is rated the No. 3 pro-style quarterback and the No. 54 overall player in the country, per 247Sports. In nine games last season, Garcia passed for 2,130 yards and 15 touchdowns, maintaining a 76 percent completion rate. (hudl)

Garcia already holds over a dozen offers at this point in time from schools like Auburn, Florida and Ohio State, among others. The Crimson Tide has yet to officially join the race. Garcia also plans to visit Auburn on his trip south.

Eta: Rakim Jarrett also plans to visit in March.

Source: Ale Kaho expected to return for Alabama's next practice (BamaInsider)

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Rising sophomore linebacker Ale Kaho is expected to return to Alabama for its next practice after missing the Crimson Tide’s opening workout of spring practice Friday, a source close to the situation told BamaInsider.com.

Kaho served on each of Alabama’s special teams units last season, tallying a team-high seven tackles on the kickoff coverage. He is thought to be a leading candidate for the starting inside linebacker position alongside Dylan Moses. After practice Friday, Alabama coach Nick Saban provided a vague response when asked about Kaho’s absence.

“He’s got some issues that he’s dealing with," Saban said. "We’re trying to be supportive of him every way that we can. I think that we’ll just continue to try to help him every way that we can. I don’t know if at some point in time he’ll be ready to come back and play football or not.”

Alabama players will have the week off for Spring Break before returning to the practice field on March 18.

Alabama experimenting with second-year LB at new position

Cameron Latu spent last season lining up across from tight ends.

Now, he’s lining up with them, at least for the time being.

Alabama is experimenting with the redshirt freshman outside linebacker at tight end, hoping to maybe add some talent to a group that’s one of the coaching staff’s biggest concerns after losing its top two tight ends from last year to the NFL and with one of its top returning tight ends — Kedrick James — suspended for the first four games of the season.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Latu, a former four-star recruit from Utah, worked with the tight ends Friday during the Crimson Tide’s opening practice of the spring.

“We do a lot of experimenting in spring to see if there is a guy at a position that might have a better opportunity to contribute at another position,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “Obviously losing Hale and Irv, we've got some experience issues at tight end and also some depth issues. Having another guy suspended for four games next year at that position, I mean, you're taking three out of the first four guys, so we need to get some people there. We've been encouraged by the progress that he's made at that position.”

Of the five scholarship tight ends that will be on Alabama’s roster come September, only three were at practice on Friday — redshirt junior Miller Forristall, redshirt sophomore Major Tennison and redshirt freshman Michael Parker.

During one drill on Friday, Forristall and Tennison made up the first group of tight ends with Latu and walk-on Giles Amos working as the second group.

Thanks for contributing. Btw, there's a stickied Spring Football News thread with posts on Thur & Fri about Latu working at TE.

Hopefully, Latu does great at TE. We need him there and it may be better for him too. It's not a huge learning curve since he played TE in HS.

From some of the highlights, can't tell if he is that good or the DB's were that bad? Lots of throws to wide open WR's...but they were long throws and on the money.
