This played a big part in it and why he was looking to leave FSU.

5-star TE Arik Gilbert 6-5.5/253 GA hudl

Dawgs247 mod Rusty Mansell flipped his CB pick from UGA to Foggy. Gilbert visited UGA's spring game and for one afternoon in late June. He's visited Tennessee a few times with his HS teammate QB Harrison Bailey (UT commit) and went to Clemson's cookout last Friday. Gilbert and his fanily spent the rest of last weekend at Bama. He's only taken 1 OV so far (Bama in June), has no other OVs scheduled and has said he might commit in September.

still a lot of confidence UGA will win this battle. Gilbert has visited UGA like 7 times already. Clemson insider on another board, generally reliable, said he is "all dawg" after getting feedback from the Clemson Cookout. Still see this as a UGA lead with Bama and "Champions of Life" still in the mix.

I found the following comments interesting:

After being removed from the team’s roster, Nick Saban on Saturday was asked about the status of Eyabi Anoma.

quote:

The outside linebacker was dismissed from the university, Saban said, and there are laws that prevent him from saying much more.

So, it looks less like he was more interested in going to back home, his GF, family issues ect., or something along those lines, and more like the University had no other choice.

Or it was an academic issue or similar failure protected under FERPA that led to his dismissal.

Yeah. I sure would have liked to have kept him in the fold.
But, it's next man up. I was just reading things that implied he left because he wanted to be with family, GF, or something wasn't to his liking on the field. Now, this sort of implies the University made the decision and not him, for whatever reason.

I don't know anything for certain, but I can make a few guesses, from the outside. 1. It was Jimbo's first head coaching job. 2. His family life fell apart. I think it's pretty common knowledge that he and his wife had issues and got a divorce. 3. I believe he butted heads with the boosters and the people in charge at FSU. I don't think they fulfilled all of the promises that they made towards upgrading facilities. 4. I wouldn't doubt that the team lost respect for Jimbo after J. Winston basically had free reign over the program.

1. He was doing ok until he showed too much loyalty to Rick Trickett, the OL coach for too long. Trickett was a good coach but past his prime and the talent level at OL slipped drastically his last couple of years.
2. True. Nothing more to add.
3. Also true. Jimbo started asking some pointed questions about funding and facilities and pissed off the wrong people. Despite their recent history of success, FSU is not financially among the elite colleges like Texas, Bama, etc and can be rather tight with their cash.
4. Contributed to #2 and #3 greatly. Winston was the beginning of the end for Fisher and led to him leaving before the total collapse of the program he saw on the horizon. Now Willie is going to be tasked with either righting the ship or being the fall guy.

Mental illness was the issue with Anoma that lead to other issues. Hopefully, he can find ways to manage it. I hope he can. I wish him well.

Take Two: Can Gators flip Tide commit Timothy Smith?
quote:

THE STORYLINE

Alabama has consistently dipped into the state of Florida for some of its best prospects, and the Crimson Tide had success again in recent days when four-star defensive tackle Timothy Smith
picked Alabama over Florida, Georgia and others.

It was another massive pledge for the Crimson Tide because the Sebastian (Fla.) Sebastian River standout is ranked as the fifth-best defensive tackle in the class and he’s another Rivals100 prospect who is leaving the state.

But this recruitment might not be over, because days after committing to Alabama, Smith showed up at Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp and he also worked out in front of the coaches.

The four-star is a top target for coach Dan Mullen and his staff, and Smith was in Gainesville spending time with four-star DE commit Gervon Dexter

Is Smith locked up for Alabama? Or do the Gators have a legitimate chance at flipping him, especially after his recent visit back to campus?

FIRST TAKE: COREY BENDER, GATORSTERRITORY.COM

“Even though Smith committed to the Crimson Tide just days prior, the plan all along was to attend Friday Night Lights with Dexter. It was viewed as more of a wait-and-see deal, but not only did Smith show up in Gainesville he also camped and was the highest-ranked prospect to do so.

“The Gators are still under consideration here, despite Smith being verbally committed to another SEC school. He is arguably UF's top target along the defensive line, and Mullen and defensive line coach David Turner have been pushing the right buttons with Smith's family as well.

"UF has been selective along the defensive line in recent months, and much of that has to do with the staff prioritizing Smith. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't take an official visit to Gainesville before it's all said and done. There is no doubting Smith's pledge to Alabama, but multiple Florida coaches and commits are making a strong push and they certainly showed that with all of the attention Smith received last Friday. Smith remains the Gators' top target along the defensive line, and that hasn't changed. Mutual interest is fairly high as well.”

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“I don’t think it’s over. Alabama has a great tradition of producing defensive linemen and putting defensive linemen and defensive tackles in the NFL. The Tide are going to compete for national championships. But I think he’s going to look around and he’s going to take visits.

“Florida would definitely be one of those teams that has a chance. There were early rumors that Clemson was going to be the school for him. I’m not sure it's as heavily involved. In the end, he’ll probably stick with Alabama because Alabama doesn’t really lose that many kids when they’re committed. But Florida could make this very, very interesting.

Former Bama LB Eyabi Anoma picks transfer destination (al.com)
quote:

It didn’t take Eyabi Anoma long to find a new team. The former Alabama outside linebacker has committed to Houston, according to sources.

Anoma has been on campus at Houston since Friday, per sources. Word is that Anoma still needs to be cleared by the university but that’s expected to happen.

The news comes one week after the former five-star recruit was dismissed from school at Alabama. Anoma had been suspended by the university earlier in the summer and was then kicked out of school following another university level issue, according to sources.

“We have a law that protects players and students in what you can and can’t say,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Saturday. “The guy was dismissed from school, and that’s really all I can say about it.”

Anoma would be the third recent former Alabama player to land with Dana Holgorsen. T.J. Simmons and Vandarius Cowan both transferred to West Virginia when Holgorsen was the team’s head coach. Now, Anoma is set to join him at Houston.

Houston is home to the largest Nigerian American community in the U.S. so Anoma will likely be with family there.

Before diving into the nuggets, there is a bit more information on injured players. As expected LaBryan Ray and Miller Forristall did not work Saturday. Joining them on the missing list was defensive back, Nigel Knott. Knott’s ailment is not known. Nick Saban said Knott is out for medical reasons. Five other players were in black, no-contact jerseys Saturday. They were Najee Harris, Darrian Dalcourt, Jalyn Armour-Davis, Xavier Williams and Scooby Carter. None are believed to have any serious problem.

Ten Alabama football player nuggets

Multiple reports state Terrell Lewis is in great shape following his injury recovery. Terrell has stated he believes he is at 100 percent. On Saturday, Nick Saban said, We’ll probably try to manage his reps to some degree, but he practiced all day yesterday. He’s worked hard all summer. He is back to a level higher than he was before he got hurt two years ago.
