Not gonna answer your whole questionnaire Gene but IMO we will actually be pretty good on Offense
Where is George when you need him?

Expected starters: Kira, Herb, Petty, Reese, Galin
Key bench players (depth): JQ (might start if given a waiver to play), Beetle, Jaden Shackelford, and maybe Forbes. Lost Gary and Rojas to season ending injuries so we can’t afford anymore losses.
Impact freshmen: Jaden Shackelford should make an IMMEDIATE impact.
Development freshmen: Forbes will be the only other one to play and develop nicely over the year. Hawkins is bad and Gary is out.
Player who sets the tone: I’m assuming Kira but there’s plenty of guys who could score 20 on any given night this year
Who will consistently score? Definitely Kira. Maybe JQ if he gets a waiver.
Who do we give the ball to in crunch time? Kira as of now, but there’s other options (just need to see how players like Petty, Beetle, and JQ do once the season starts)
Same answer for who to depend on down the stretch. Maybe Herb as well.
Who has improved? Pretty much everyone has improved from everything I’ve heard. I don’t think Javian has a whole lot but he’s better than he was.
Who do I expect to disappoint? I don’t “expect” any of them to disappoint but I know someone will.
Offense should be almost 100% for what Oats wants. Avery left him the perfect pieces. Like I said, we can’t afford anymore injuries tho or that changes. Not really sure what they’ll struggle with but they should be a good shooting team.
Tbh I don’t know enough about defense in basketball to speak on that part. Galin and Reese will have to do their part to replace Hall tho. High praise from Oats on them so far.
Expectation: At least 20 wins and an NCAAT appearance. This team should be good enough to win 20 games bc of the pieces Avery left and the players Oats recruited in like Beetle (maybe JQ). The non-conference schedule is tough but manageable and we only play Kentucky once....I definitely can see 20+ wins with this group. Probably in the 4-6 range of the SEC. I’d consider that a success too.

What's the threshold that defines "disappointing?"
If Alabama makes NIT and wins 18-19, is that a disappointment?

In my mind it would depend on how they happen. Win against the weak OOC foes, play well, improve all year, but just don’t quite get there against enough of the better conference teams and I’ll feel fine about 18-19 wins and the NIT.
Start good, make a splash, and collapse down the stretch like all of Avery’s seasons will be very disappointing.

If they make the NIT, it’s a disappointment. This team should not miss the tourney unless we have another key injury or two. That’s how Oats feels. He’s said it publicly multiple times, so I’m gonna go with what he said

Expected starters: Kira, Herb, Petty, Reese, Galin (Could see Reese moving to the 5 or Fleming taking Galin’s spot if we see more of the same from Smith)
Key bench players (depth): Beetle, Jaden Shackelford, JQ, and Fleming
Impact freshmen: Huge fan of Shackelford. I could see him crack the starting rotation before the end of the season. He may be the most skilled scoring recruit we’ve landed since I started tracking recruiting in the late Gottfried era. Sexton is obviously the better scorer because of his athleticism and his complete confidence, but in terms of his total arsenal of shot creation moves, Shackelford has the edge in skill as a recruit (according to what I have seen of both in HS). Shocked he wasn’t ranked higher (likely due to his level of HS competition). Oats has also praised his hustle and competitiveness, which is something that was a bit of an unknown for most of us until the preseason started.
Development freshmen: Forbes is the only other guy I can see playing.
Player who sets the tone: Kira Lewis offensively and Herb Jones defensively.
Who will consistently score? Kira, Beetle and possibly Shackelford
Who do we give the ball to in crunch time? Kira is the obvious answer, but Petty when he’s hot and Shackelford may have the most tools when it comes to creating his own shot on the team. Really could have up to 5 or 6 go to scorer types if everyone plays to their potential.
Who has improved? Based off of Oats comments, the big men are probably the most improved (Smith, Reese and Fleming).
Who do I expect to disappoint? My guess would be JQ (if he can play). He’s been pretty hyped up on this board, but he was bad last year, both defensively and surprisingly offensively in one of the most efficient offensive systems in the NCAA.
Expectation: Around 20 wins and an NCAAT appearance. Pretty much agree with everything Bamafan says here.

The only wild card is sometimes it’s not your own record that determines who makes The Dance, the strength of the field is also a determining factor. Last year, the field was absolute trash and we still couldn’t bumble our way in. This year it might be different. 20 wins doesn’t guarantee you a ticket. Let’s hope for the best and play our way in to the party.

I'll take it. Petty and Herb getting to double figures is promising.

So we are 35 points better than last year? Undefeated season imo

I’m VERY pleased with this. 90 points and a win over a pretty good JSU team in our first game of any kind in the Oats era

I assume JQ didn’t play and Beetle played very little if any?

No Beete and No JQ. I will take it

Cecil just confirmed JQ and Beetle didn’t play. Beetle is still trying to heal his shoulder

The Herb and Javian parts of that mini box score are the most encouraging to me.

Jax State had the 53rd best offense in the NCAA last year too. Not surprising they put up a lot of points.

Liked Flemings stat line. We need his defense and rebounding. Hope he comes of age this year.
