They play a bunch of sophomores and juniors who played last year as freshmen and won 16 games. It's an experienced team that improved.
3 of our 5 guys with the most minutes played are true freshmen that have played a total of 10 games (against a Top 10 schedule). UCF sucked, but I'm not gonna get too mad about them looking out of sync for stretches.

We ll be better than them by the time we play them. They're winning by scrapping but fell apart late in the game.
They are a dang good team. They aren't lucking out. They have a great post player and a bunch of solid, versatile wings with 2 very solid point guards.

They're solid , not taking it away from them...But the first 2 weeks or so of sec play for them is a nightmare. What's encouraging is what was mentioned a few posts ago about our team , which is we're a team full of youngsters that's faced a top 10 schedule and we re doing well. Out of sorts sometimes yes, but no more of those long scoring droughts that have plagued us in the past and we re a gritty bunch also.

Really hope we come out and take care of business early against Mercer Tuesday. Would be nice to lay the hammer down early and play from up 12-18 most of the game instead of having a 4 point game until stretching it out late.

We've done that like 2 teams this season. I'm hoping with you. But we will probably be stressing out lol.

This stretch between games feels twice as long as it has actually been.

Drove to Knoxville yesterday to watch UT and UNC. Was my first trip to Thompson Bowling Arena. Awesome place to watch a game, the arena is really nice. The concourse area and the concession area are horrible, but oh well.
This Tennessee team is really good. Their guards can pressure the ball and their bigs are a load on the block. Bama is going to struggle with #2 and #5. Both a much thicker than our big men and both can score on multiple levels. I came away impressed with UT even though they lost in the last couple of minutes.

How are ya'll feeling about UTx even if Braxton is out? I imagine expectations are for a W considering Jones is prob out with that wrist injury

We better not lose to Mercer or Texas. Those are my feelings. The expectations are for wins.
I saw Admon Gilder is out for a few weeks with a knee injury. That might help us in the game against A&M.

I haven't seen Tex play yet this year. If its a typical Shaka team, I don't see their pressure bothering us on a consistent basis. Sure, there will be times when our mostly freshman team lose their minds, but we have several guys that can handle the ball so we should get some easy shots (if we don't end up with 30 turnovers). I would be much more worried if we didn't have a pro Bama crowd at this "neutral" site.

I've seen a few games. Without Jones (injured), Texas is basically an offense optional team. I'd say as long as either Sexton/Petty have a good game, or Bamba fouls out, ya'll should be fine for this one.
The concern would be if Hall/Giddens get in foul trouble. Transfer Dylan O (6'9 245) makes up for in skill what he lacks in talent. As in, he uses his interior post moves effectively to draw fouls. I'd be concerned if the post requires Herb/Norris/Galin to gives serious minutes to defend UTx skill (Dylan O) or athleticism (Bamba/Sims)

They definitely apply pressure, but Smart doesn't seem to do the VCU "HAVOC" defense like he used to. Still a key part of their D, but it isn't make or break

Their pressure is effective, but I'd point out their very good half court D is probably the bigger game changer. This has been both the best D 2FG % & D 3FG % team of his career (frequently where FC pressure teams struggle)
A huge part of that is Bamba's freakish length/rim protection, but most of their team are fringe elite athletes and are very effective getting back into the halfcourt

Is there a concern that UTx would have a sizable contingent of fans? I mean this is in BHam isn't it?

Texas is still counted as a home game RPI wise
Posted on 12/18/17 at 3:42 pm to GenesChin
Yes it’s in BHam. It’ll be almost all Bama. I know it has been that way the last 2 years. Read someone on twitter that apparently worked at the BJCC a few weeks ago say he heard it’s almost sold out.
Speaking of sold out, the Rocket City Classic has no more tickets available for the second straight year.

I think anything within 50 miles is a "home" RPI game
I wouldn't read too much into it. RPI is being phased out by the committee.

Let's not act like we've been playing a lot of Mercer level teams in our Non-Conference schedule like most teams do. Our SOS is 5th in the entire nation and I don't see it likely to fall out of the top 10 by season's end. That is why you're not seeing a lot of blowout wins.
We have played only one team that I'd say isn't capable of beating a top 25ish team. That team was Alabama A&M. While Mercer is better than A&M, they are by a very significant margin the 2nd worst team we've played since Sexton was eligible. While you can never write off a team with a solid coach like Mercer has, I'd be surprised if we didn't handle Mercer.

That line is much lower than what I was expecting to see.

Texas beat la tech by 15. I didn't watch it so I don't know what the circumstance were but still that's a pretty impressive win.

Both Alabama A&M and Lipscomb are clearly worse than Mercer according to Kenpom, ESPN BPI and TeamRankings predictive rankings so I assume you are using RPI
NCAAT committee has already announced they are phasing out RPI and don't put much weight into it.
