By far the most comparable all around opponent we've played this season to Virginia Tech is Florida.

Virginia Tech/Florida KenPom Ranks (out of 351 D1 teams)

Offensive Efficiency : 39/37
Defensive Efficiency : 54/25
Tempo : 144/239
Offensive Rebounding % : 312/170
3PA per FGA : 101/100
Offensive Turnover % : 67/6
Defensive Steal % : 56/6
Defensive Block % : 302/105
Height : 176/153

The good news is Virginia Tech is one of the worst rebounding teams in the country (312th in offensive, 203rd in defensive) and isn't a rim protecting threat (302nd in block %). That's good news as our biggest consistent weakness is rebounding (even when we are playing well) (166th offensive, 256th defensive).

They are, however, an all around efficient team that shoots well from both 3 and 2.

In before Gene comes to tell you why VA Tech is ackshually a much tougher opponent than Florida.

Back to my original point, Hall doesn't feast inside on smaller teams by posting up

Smaller, more athletic guys with low center of gravity hold up well. Hall does better against tall lanky post players and it shows in his stats

I like Hall. This was only interested as a recognition of ideal matchup for him

Again, I agree. If the kid ever develops a little step-out jumper (8-10 ft), he'll become a REAL problem for opponents...I understand they're working with him on his shot.

Early in the year, before the wrist brace, he was shooting FT's pretty well. He has a good-looking shot, especially for a big guy. I think he's capable of a short, face-up game.

I totally agree. I saw him shoot/hit a little baseline jumper a few weeks ago that looked really solid...wonder if Pelfrey is behind that?

Well into the year he was shooting right around 70% from the line. It isn’t hard at all to see how a wrist injury could have a big impact on his free throws.

Hall improved a tremendous amount this year, but the goal for next year is he just has to get stronger overall.

When guys put a body on him, he has a tendency to just get knocked off balance.

His post game doesn’t really matter that much in regards to any pro potential he has, but it would help us for sure.

That and, like others have said, work on the 8-12 foot jumper

He isn't the only one. Reese can be dangerous if he can bulk up and learn better footwork in the post. Wouldn't hurt if he and Giddens could stop dribbling when they get fed inside, and just immediately go for the jump hook as soon as they touch the ball when one-on-one.

I might prefer Reese to lose five pounds or so.

Regardless, he needs to be in the gym a lot.

He needs to get rid of 15-20 lbs of baby fat and lean up.

Turn him into the college version of Dirk

John Petty after the Kentucky loss:

quote:

I’m a shooter, and shooters sometimes have droughts,” Petty said. “They have times where they don’t make shots, and that was just one of my times. But I feel like that I’ve got my confidence coming into the tournament, and I feel like it’s at the right time.”

If Petty is on we can do some damage. If we upset Nova things open up for us because it really is a weak bracket other than them.
