His effort or his performance?

Honest question, you think he decided to play with a painful joint injury guaranteed to cause splitting pain at least 4-5 times during games in 3 of the biggest games of the season and quickly decided "meh, whatever, not giving any effort" after 3 years of superb effort?

That makes sense.

The words “effort” and “lazy” are ironically used pretty lazily and without effort in this thread.

Any debate that Rick won COTY over Bruce?

You could easily argue for either of them, but I think UT has a worse roster so I'd lean Barnes. UT had a slightly better overall year as well and had a harder conference schedule I think.

Look what Barnes has done in his third year compared to Avery. Avery has recruited better and actually beat the Vols this season but Barnes got his players to perform. This is another reason I don't buy the, "He needs another year" argument.

I don't disagree - but Tennessee fans were ready to tie Barnes to a stake after last season, too.

St Mary's turned down games against Nevada and Rhode island this year. Not buying that about them not able to schedule better

So, are you going to put money on Avery winning coach of the year next season?

Not to mention Barnes has coached his teams to a tournament 22 times. I'd give Barnes a much longer leash than Avery.

You're right, but I actually thought UT seemed like a well coached team a year ago even though they weren't very good record wise. Maybe it's just having an outside perspective.

Both. Hall is way over-hyped by our fan-base. He is soft around the rim and consistently gets out-hustled and out-rebounded by players much shorter than him, and his body language on the court was pretty bad for the last couple weeks of the season, which is frustrating because he should be a leader for this team.

IMHO, the ONLY reason Pearl didn’t get COY was the situation at the beginning of the year with the FBI and the Auburn admin. I think the guy is a snake oil salesman and will do anything to further his own cause but you can’t question his coaching skills or what he did with this Auburn team.

Pearl is shady as hell, but he's a good coach.

Maybe, but Barnes did a hell of a job. They were picked 13th in the preseason and nobody was disagreeing with that assessment except for some people in orange. And those people would have argued they should be 6/7, not co-#1.

Everyone knew Pearl had built a competitive roster. Some folks were starting to wonder if he could still get it done there, but anyone with a brain knew he had some pieces in place (even after Wiley/Purifoy were suspended).

They both did a great job, but with Auburn's late season swoon I get Barnes getting it.

According to who exactly? Even still, Rhode Island isn't historically good + Nevada wasn't a lock to be good considering minutes continuity is >#200 nationally

St Mary's isn't going to just become a traveling basketball team playing all road games. Their fans are pretty passionate and want to see them play too

I got no problem with Barnes getting, I just believe Bruce should have had a "Co" attached. I truly believe the FBI investigation lost it for Pearl

It's a fact they turned down those games, several respected people who cover college basketball have mentioned it. Their schedule was as bad as Mississippi state's.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I just literally can't find it anywhere.

Their NonConf (#186 RPI, #290 KenPom) was significantly better than MSU (#296RPI, Kenpom #345)

As I mentioned, St Marys at least made somewhat of an effort though to play a handful of games against non bottom feeders unlike MSU

-Scheduled Dayton + NMSU (Both avg ~25W previous 3 yrs)
- Played @ a P5 Opponent
-Participated in a neutral site tournament

Are you sure you're making an argument as to why they deserve to be in?

Sounds like they both don't deserve to be in.

I’ve seen the same thing going around twitter with people saying St. Mary’s turned down games against Rhode Island and Nevada. I saw one or two smaller CBB writers bashing them earlier today and then a lot of fans were saying the same thing. One Nevada fan was on there talking about he knew for a fact they turned down a game with Nevada. Nothing confirmed, but a lot of smoke that maybe it did happen
