Yeah St. Mary's is interesting because they have such a great record, but their resume is awful. Only 4 wins against RPI top 100 teams. If the committee is serious about the quadrants, they're in trouble.
BYU has done well for us, but we need them to lose to Gonzaga. Don't need them stealing a bid.

Yes. Some people don’t realize how big that game was tonight. BYU beat St Mary’s and so it does 2 things for Bama:
1. Helps Bama’s RPI bc we won on a neutral court vs BYU
2. It possibly knocks St Mary’s our of an at large bid
Now we need BYU to lose tomorrow in the championship vs Gonzaga. We don’t need BYU winning and that putting BYU and Gonzaga in. We need Gonzaga to win so they’re the only one who gets in and that saves another spot open

Agreed. Although a BYU win would likely take away a bid from Saint Mary's because I don't see 3 teams from that league getting in. It could be a win-win for teams like us regardless.

No, you don’t want BYU winning tomorrow. At all.
BYU win=one less at large bid, small change in RPI for Bama
BYU loss=one more at large bid available, small change in RPI for Bama

Oh I agree. I'm just looking at the scenarios for both possible outcomes.

Wow. Forbes and ETSU got boat raced last night in their conference final. UNC-Greensboro beat them handily after being tied at the half.

Every coach has been blown out. Doesn't change that Forbes has been incredible at ETSU and just about everywhere else he has been

Forbes is a great basketball coach. Everyone I know who follows ETSU basketball back home (and there are quite a few, it's a solid mid major) absolutely loves the guy.
Honestly, he's the guy Ole Miss should be after. My guess is the NCAA stuff would keep them away but he'd be great there.

Not sure why St Marys every year gets shafted by the "SOS" argument while plenty of other midmajors don't get judged the same way.
Yes, St Marys has an extremely easy SOS, they also have won 29 games including @Gonzaga and consistently are competitive/win in the NCAAT. I see no reason why some P5 team should get in just because they have lost more games against decent opponents
I just find it hard to believe that in a field of 68 there are plenty of places for teams <20Wins while not one spot for a 29Win team

AU beat MTSU and I'm saying that St Marys >>>>> MTSU who is projected in the field
This has always bugged me about NCAAT selection. If St Marys was a 25 or 26W team, ya leave them out. A 29Win team though deserves to be in. Winning that many games in a season is extremely difficult even in the lower leagues

Saint Mary's biggest problem is that something like 85% of their schedule fell into the dreaded Group 3/4 mix.
Group 1/2 : 4-3
Group 3 : 9-2
Group 4 : 15-0
Rhode Island
Group 1/2 : 5-5
Group 3 : 8-1
Group 4 : 10-0
MTSU
Group 1/2 : 5-4
Group 3 : 7-2
Group 4 : 11-0
So, not a giant difference, but a clear one.
Honestly, I think Saint Mary's biggest problem is they get judged against Gonzaga and not other individual mid-majors. Gonzaga is able to play in big tournaments and play big neutral games while Saint Mary's isn't, and that obviously makes Gonzaga's OOC schedule much better and makes Saint Mary's look "worse". I don't know if it's a West Coast thing or what, but I definitely think that is what happens.
I don't understand how they would get left out, though.
28 wins plus 43 RPI, 32 ELO, 30 BPI, 29 KenPom, 46 Non Conference RPI, etc. That'd be silly.

Yeah but are three more wins really that significant if they were against crap teams?

Give ‘em our slot. They’ve earned it more than we have!

You can't fault St Marys for trying though. Their OOC was filled with P5, some solid mid majors and other programs that have had success in recent years
- 2 Pac12
- 1 SEC
- New Mexico St
- Dayton
- UC Irvine (5 straight 20+ W seasons before this year)
- UNC Asheville
- Harvard
I honestly don't think a program like St Marys can schedule "better." For a team that's a very hard to beat you don't get much in return for beating them. They aren't a TV exposure opportunity, they aren't a signature resume win and they aren't viewed as a "quality loss"
Not like they get invited to good OOC tournaments either

Ya, because this would be the first time since at least '01-02 (as far back as I went) that a 27W regular season team has been left out of the tournament. Teams don't have 27Wins in the regular season very often even vs "crap opponents"
The only comparable records to be left out were a Murray St, Coastal Carolina and SFA programs that were roughly 26-5. Those programs though played significantly easier schedules than St Mary's trash schedule though. St Marys also beat a likely top 3-4 seed Gonzaga

Yep - definitely agree.

If MTSU loses before their championship game, I'd say they're on the bubble as well.
Rhode Island has a much better resume than St. Mary's. Rhode Island's RPI is 16, SOS is 59, and your favorite metric SOR is 33. St. Mary's RPI is 36, SOS is 181, and SOR is 49. Rhode Island has played a much harder schedule than St. Mary's.

They've also won more games against decent/good opponents.

Mid-major teams get shafted over strength of schedule every year, and if we're just talking about this season, St. Mary's has a far worse SOS than any other potential at-large midmajor.
All that said I think St. Mary's should be in, but it's a crap resume and they should be a 10 at best.
