It's strange to me how he is almost openly a Georgia person, everyone in the industry knows he loves UGA, and yet nobody really seems to question it.
Maybe I've missed the articles, but he doesn't seem to report much on UGA. At least not more than any other national reporter would
His 'UGA bias' / AJC background really shines on hit pieces on UGA rivals. If it is even remotely scandalous about some SEC school or AU in particular, you know Schlabach is on the scene

I dunno, how Thmel done anything in the last 10 years that isn't laughably ridiculous? It's almost like that's his shtick now so he perpetuates it.
Thamel may put out garbage, but it is at least refined garbage that's been edited and without mistake for the story he is telling.
Schlabach does whta Thamel does, except he writes sh** and waits to edit it as people find inaccuracies, then he edits without note to fix his problems

I get that and I kinda agree with you, but we have to take a look at the team performance without him this season, and when he's on the court. I think it's uncomfortable narrative we're establishing here, but we have to at least entertain that right now.
Against UF, Petty didn't start.. and the team went on 6-0 run. When Petty came in.. Things fell apart. That was when they were on court together. To fix the scoring issue, Petty needs to come off the bench from now on, and allow Sexton to truly run the offense. When Petty comes in, take out Sexton and let Petty create his shot in some ways.

Cecil Hurt: Today’s column on a basketball team that is sinking fast
Cecil doesn’t get overly critical, but he’s starting to get critical of the staff a little in this article. When Cecil starts saying stuff like this, you know it’s gotten bad

I'm glad he wrote it, and you're right - Cecil doesn't write these types of articles unless there are real issues.

I remember Grant’s last year he wrote an article that basically was saying it’s time for Grant to go. Everyone was saying there was no way he would survive after that, and he didn’t. Avery needs to get this fixed quickly

What pushed Grant over the she was Pearl having success in the SECT that year. If Pearl & AU has not made it to Saturday, people don’t freak out and Battles takes the easy way out by keeping Grant.

Yep
Much like how Saban has pushed Auburn to compete at a higher level in football, Pearl did it to us with Grant and will hold our feet to the fire now too. It's an absolute blessing, especially in basketball where both programs can have their desired level of success at the same time (unlike football).

Spot on by Cecil, as usual. He's the best sportswriter in the state, in my opinion. He doesn't get swept up in overreactions one way or the other, and is very good at pointing out actual issues rather than just regurgitated talking points that may have no real basis.
And, I agree with him completely - it's poor coaching.

Cecil also only writes these articles when something is legitimately hitting peak mass. And while this wasn't one of his famous "time to move on" articles, it was about as close as you could get without stepping over that line.
It does make me think Saturday and the SECT are pretty important for Avery's future. I'm not sure they have to win them, but if they come out and embarrass themselves again.........I think there is a chance that is it.

That’s the scary thing about that article. Like you said, he doesn’t just write these type of articles for views and to get people talking. He writes these when there’s a serious problem. Maybe he knows something we don’t

It's pretty clear to me from reading his article that he is aware of 2 problems:
1) There is indeed inner turmoil on the roster. Players either don't know their role or refuse to play their role.
2) The coaching staff is not doing its job to either ensure players understand their role or worse actually accept the role they've been given.

I agree. It’s one thing to lose out. It’s a competitive SEC and you get unlucky bounces/calls. It’s another for it to involve a complete meltdown. If we get run out of the gym in College Station and St. Louis, I think Avery’s seat becomes really hot. If that coincides with AU winning the SECT, then all bets are off. People always say “No matter what happens, there’s no way X Coach gets fired.” Then reality happens and the losses are real and that coach is suddenly fired.
Avery spent 3 years injecting energy into this program. That would all be out the window (if it isn’t already) if this trajectory continues.

I'll talk some of you off the ledge. I heard the exact same problems regarding the Auburn team at the end of last year. You won't find articles on it because AU beat writers suck
It shouldn't be shocking that this sentiment exists. Right now, you have a lot of new puzzle pieces that unfortunately fit different puzzles. When you start losing, young guys get frustrated and upset
I've said it up and down this thread, Bama needs to teach kids how to shoot or more likely just recruit better shooters considering Avery Jr is 21 and still can't shoot.
When you run an uptempo pick & roll offense, you need to spread the floor with shooters. Ya the Butler kid coming in may be a good shooter (tho FR typically struggle before improving YR2) but I'm talking about catch & shoot options on the wing.
I'm not convinced Petty is that guy, he seems better creating a shot rather than catch & shoot. The rest of the wings in Ingram/Key haven't been good their entire careers while Herb Jones may get respectable but he doesn't have a shooters mentality

Auburn fan here, I'd rather buy lotto tickets than bet on AU to win the SECT. It ain't happening brother

JMO but Avery is maxed out as a HC. He is a pretty good recruiter and a great salesman for Bama. The only problem is he is an average coach and it appears his assistant coaching staff don't add much to help him or maybe he doesn't allow their input. Perhaps the one and done player should be avoided at Bama and by that I mean you need several on the team to keep things level..(kentucky).There seems to be some resentment by a player or two on this roster regarding Sexton.

Ya'll have recruited guys who can hit a shot, you haven't recruited shooters. As in, I can't think of a single Bama player since 2010 that would choose a 3PT shot over trying to drive the lane if given the choice.
