But that's Bama basketball. Always has been always will be.
I always have to remind myself that most of the folks here are barely old enough to remember the tail end of Gottfried. Those of us older know this statement isn’t true at all.

I'm 32 and the only Alabama basketball I've known is good but never quite good enough (outside of the sold our soul to the devil NCAAT in 2004).
- The entire Wimp era was spent finding the hottest team in the NCAAT and playing them in the Sweet 16
- The Gottfried era was nothing but dick tease. Kent State, UWM and Bruce, #1 to a 10 seed, just the tip vs UCLA in San Diego, then the collapse
And of course everything since then.

It has obviously never been Saban/Bear but from CM Newton to Wimp and even foe the most part David Hobbs and early Gottfried Bama was on the shot list to be the other-than-Kentucky favoritebin the SEC and making the NCAA was expected.
Your assessment of the Wimp era is spot on. Those were great teams that could never get over the hump, but the standard was way higher than it this now. David Hobbs was fired because making the dance twice in five years wasn’t good enough.
There is no reason we can’t get to where the discussion will again be can we get past the sweet 16 this year instead of if we will get in at all.

How exactly is it not true? We are 32nd all time in Division 1 wins. Every program ahead of us except BYU has at least one Final Four, and all of them have multiple Elite Eights. Most of the programs right behind us also have at least one Final Four and multiple Elite Eights. If falling just short no matter how good the team is isn't the story of our basketball program I don't know what is.

I mean I sure hope so. I want that badly.

You moved the goalposts.
Your post was about losing a game that cost us a top 25 ranking and a very solid tourney resume, which is an accurate picture of where we are now. Where we used to be is that we always won those games and only fell short when trying to step into the range of the elites.
As far as some of those other programs go, I think it is a mistake to look at final 4s. Georgia, for example has a final 4 but a grand total of 2 sweet 16s in their entire history. South Carolina was there last year and it was their first 16 (of a total of 4) since 1973.
Bama is second to UK in SEC wins and tourney titles and third behind those and LSU in regular season titles.
Getting back to that level is a realistic expectation.

I see a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the program right now. If we can continue to recruit players like the ones in this freshman class, we are going to be exciting and successful. I believe that Avery knows what he is doing and I'm enjoying watching this group.
Also, did anyone see if Galin Smith played against Oklahoma? I dont remember seeing him

I don't think he played.

I like Giddens getting those extra minutes. Giddens has been really good on the boards lately. He's just got to stay out of foul trouble.

That isn't moving the goalposts. When we have been good, we have always fallen short of greatness because of a game or two. When we have been a bubble team, we have always missed the field because of a game or two. That is the entire story of our program. We have won a lot of games because we have rarely been as awful as we were over much of the last decade, but programs with similar win totals have experienced far more postseason success.
And I don't see how postseason success is a poor measure of a program's performance. Yes UGA and South Carolina have been to Final Fours, but otherwise their histories are pretty much crap. Compared to teams with similar historic W-L records we have underperformed both in terms of tournament appearances and tournament success though. You can try to explain that away all you want, but the reality is that "not quite good enough" has always been a big part of our basketball history. Sometimes that means ending up on the wrong side of the bubble, sometimes it means choking in the tournament, sometimes it's injuries, sometimes it's just plain bad luck. Regardless, it is something we have always dealt with.

where can you find conference SOS? Just looking at some of these schedules, some of these look so different - much easier than others.
gene?

Women's team blew it vs Auburn.

Once we get our top girls to stay at home, we will be good. It only really takes one. But that's easier said than done

We have any reason to worry about Mizzou on Wednesday, other than shitting the bed?
Posted on 1/29/18 at 8:48 am to Gary Busey
A little. They've lost 4 of their last 5 games but they've kept them close and the only win was an upset of Tennessee.
On the other hand, they lost their backup point guard (who started the last two seasons) on Friday and their one-and-done is still hurt.
We can't sleepwalk, but losing to them at home would be a pretty epic bed shaitting.

Yeah. Outside of South Carolina we've struggled with the defense first, slower pace teams - Texas, UCF, and UGA

I've been really trying not to overreact one way or the other this year. This is a young team with, frankly, a "young" coach who is just learning the college game. I'm trying to remain open, optimistic, and realistic.
That said, the team seems to have the talent. And I like the way Avery has used them lately. It SEEMS like he may be narrowing down a lineup finally and letting them develop some chemistry.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised to if we lost the next two games in a row, but I also think this team could be coming together and might go on a run. I'm not hedging my bets, I honestly just don't know which way this team will go. They might continue the win, win, loss, win, loss, win pattern, or they could really turn it on. The talent is there.

Agree. And the effort is there too. They're just all figuring things out. Just gotta hop on for the ride knowing you might get bucked off a few times

So according to RPI forecast, our RPI would be 7 points better if we just didn’t schedule Alabama A&M
