Depriests best skills are knowledge of the d to make the calls and his ability to shed blocks and plug gaps. I remember seeing a video from the lsu game where he effortless shrugs off the block of 270 lb fb jc copeland and goes and stonewalls 233lb jeremy hill at the los. Not as athletic in coverage or lateral pursuit, but a monster stopping the run

I agree. I think TDP is exceptional in a base 3-4. His coverage skills leave a lot to be desired. Seems like Ragland is a similar player even though we haven't seen a lot of him in coverage, so that might be a bad assumption. When you see Foster everyone almost instantly thinks "thumper" but I've actually be impressed with Foster in coverage. I don't think he's terrific in man coverage but he's effective in zone. I think the staff wants to find some backers who excell in coverage. SDH might be that guy for now, although I think Holcombe and Clark will be in that role eventually.

I thought the word on ragland is he's pretty good in coverage, very athletic for his size. If i remember, he had that nice pick in the spring game where he diagnosed, dropped back into the zone like a pro and highpointed the ball. I think that's why he moved into moselys spot.

He seems smart in coverage, and is athletic for his size. He's no Mosley, but he's probably one of the more capable big ILBs we've had in coverage.

Yeah I think Ragland can be comparable in coverage to Ro; probably not quite as good as pre-injury Dont'a but not a liability in coverage. I remember Ragland being a very good HS basketball player and I think his skill set is more than that of just a thumper.

I'm hoping that we see a better rotation and substitution pattern this year with the D-Line and linebackers. We have the depth and talent although much of it is inexperienced, I think fresh bodies and live action will be a big difference at the end of the season considering there is essentially an added game possibly.

It has to be smarts that are getting SDH on the field. He isn't the best athlete at LB.

@schadjoe: Butch Davis said he thinks Jake Coker will eventually be the guy and he saw him make 5 big-time throws today

Butch Davis on CFB Live (they're in Tuscaloosa) said Sims looked good, but said Coker stood out with his poise and made 5 really big time throws.

Getting interesting, aside from Coker's 1st day it seems pretty even. That said I still believe Sims will start the WVU game.

Definitely. Unless he gets injured, there is nothing that will happen that will stop Sims from starting. Just seems like every day people are seeing more and more out of Coker. If the light comes on before or against West Virginia, the competition won't be as close as we think/hope. That's not even a knock on Sims. If Coker just wakes up one day and gets it mentally, he's the guy. Sims is rightfully going to be given every chance to win the job.

A common theme seems to be that Sims is just trying to keep the job, and Coker is playing to win it. Sims needs to know that the job isn't truly his yet. Hope both of them step up. Can't go wrong with either, and will be excited for whoever wins.

I agree with you. We all know Coker has a higher ceiling. I think this competition has a lot to do with Coach Saban controlling hype/expectations for Coker and also rewarding Blake for his effort and committment. Honestly though we haven't seen much out of Blake in terms of what he can do if given the keys. Also the team wants to see Blake play and start. Eventually the players know coach will play the player who gives us the best chance to win, but that initial morale boost can go a long way for us.

If Coker wins the job, it'll be on the field. Saban knows what he's doing. The team likes Sims. They like Coker too, but Sims has been their friend for longer. They want him to get his chance. If they get in a game and they see Coker is the better guy (if he is), they'll be all in behind him.

Pairing Coker up with Ryan Kelly in a room was pretty telling of how the staff thought this would end up playing out, though.

I agree he's not the best athlete, but he is a bit different type of athlete than some of the other guys we have. Smarts is definitely a big part of it. He must have a nice combination of smarts and athleticism if he has truly earned a spot with the 1's.
