If Brown retains his spot, I wonder if Dom Jackson would get more work at LG or RT. Another option is to just have Dom as a backup at multiple positions this year and start him next year, similar to Brown's path.

This whole OL has size though, it's crazy. I sometimes worry that Sims won't be able to see over em.

Cameron Robinson: 6'6" 323
Arie Kouandjio: 6'5" 315
Ryan Kelly: 6'5" 296
Leon Brown: 6'6" 320
Austin Shepherd: 6'5" 320

Dominick Jackson: 6'7" 320
Grant Hill: 6'6" 308

Appears that Leon Brown was NOT practicing today. Taylor was at RG

lol, nice. I thought it would be odd that Taylor got bumped so fast.

i know some folks arent too high on Taylor but he looked liked he's improved physically when I saw him at A-day. Kinda like a cross between Warmack and Fluker.

I kind of hope they redshirt him if they can. He apparently still needs a ton of work on his pass blocking, but he's got the attitude of absolute mauler.

I felt like that attitude was what we were really missing last season in the Oline.

I'd like him to redshirt too, if he isn't going to start. Only thing there is, I think they want him to get experience as a backup. Like Leon Brown did last year.

where are you getting that from? they were just working him at LT so I'd assume he's shown some ability as a pass blocker, even if he isnt ready to start at LT.

I'd be a little bit surprised if he redshirts. I know we've kinda got away from the safe assumption that JUCO kids are brought in to start (not sure if its bc we've misevaluated some guys or a change in philosophy), but I think that is still the ideal scenario.

You mean't can right Monty?

I wanna see him get better as far as coaching in that area. Don't wanna lose his recruiting ability down in FL, but he does need to show progression across the O-line this year imo.

It's important to remember that at College of San Mateo, Jackson was essentially asked to run block. His lack of experience taking a pass set showed during pass rush drills, as he hasn't developed the skills and patience needed to have consistent success against guys at this level

Eta: There was also this:

Despite that, Jackson held (no pun intended) his own. It wasn't always pretty, but when he did engage defenders, he finished the deal.

So it is obviously more of a question on when he will be able to contribute rather than if.

Yeah, Dom Jackson needs to develop more as a pass protector. Could be why he ultimately ends up at Guard, whether that be LG or RG remains to be seen. He's got the nastiness you like on the right side.

I think the OL is gonna be ok.

Just some general thoughts on the current status of the OL. Friendly disclaimer that it's mostly just my opinion, which ultimately holds little weight.

LT: Cam Robinson

I think C-Rob is gonna be great for us. I do't know if he'll be great this year, there will definitely be some growing pains, but I think he's gonna show flashes of a future first round pick.

LG: Arie Kouandjio

I haven't given up on Arie, but boy was I disappointed in his performance last season. The good news is, he's another year removed from his injuries, so maybe that'll make a difference in terms of how he performs. I'm still not sure he keeps the job, but I think he can have a solid year.

C: Ryan Kelly

Got pushed around a bit last year, but now he's more experienced and has added some muscle. He moves well, which fits well with out ZBS. I think he has a breakout season and will become one of the better Centers in the SEC.

RG: Leon Brown

No one knows the extent of his injury right now, so it is tough to say whether or not he's gonna be out there vs WVU. I liked his play in the Sugar Bowl for the most part, and I liked him coming out of JUCO. I think he can be a roadpaver at Guard, and solid in pass pro on the inside as well.

RT: Austin Shepherd

I have a similar opinion on Shep as I do Arie. I'll give this to Shep though, he got better as the season went on. He knows the system, and that's big in the scheme. I don't think he's particularly powerful or athletic, but he's a smart player and can have a good season.

OL: Dominick Jackson

He's a mammoth at 6'7" 320lbs. Looks like he's gonna end up at Guard, and I like him at either position. I don't know if he takes either of the jobs, but he has a golden opportunity at RG with Brown currently sidelined. If Brown comes back strong, look for Dom to make a push at LG.

OL: Grant Hill

Can play anywhere on the OL. Liked his play last year. Right now I think he's pretty much focused on the RT job. I don't know if he takes it from Shep, but I do think he'll be the first man off the bench and I think he is a threat to win the RT job.

Even if he isn't amazing right off the bat it does feel great to know someone has that spot locked down for the next 3-4 years.

Yep. I feel the same way about Brown starting. If he does, we've got stability at the position for three years.

josh frazier sure does not look sloppy for a 335 pound freshman lineman. usually when they come in that big its mostly fat, but he doesnt look that way

I always believed the staff recruited JUCOs that could contribute immediately. If they could great but it seems more of need to have experience and depth with them. They may be coming from JUCO but still more experience than someone coming out of HS and hopefully a little more mature. DJ may not start but he will see a lot of action this fall. I like that him and GH can play multiple positions.

Our D-Line sure looks great on paper but i'm still skeptical. Sure wish Stout was still around. Glad that Bo Davis is back though, our d-line is going to wreck shop. Front 7 may be similar to 2011 or better. I got a feeling someone is going to have an Upshaw type season.
