This is why I love track athletes. When they train they push harder than most, because even when on a team they have to beat their team mates to win. Everything in track is so attention to detail and where football a lot of guys are highly ranked in HS based on athletic ability or strength but when they get to college have a lot to fix. Track guys have to pay attention to every detail especially when your competing on the level TB and MH have been.
I would not be surprised to see TB the starter at some point this fall and MH getting a lot of time. UA has 2 future AA I believe barring injuries and whatnot. Will have to come up with a nickname for them like when we had the bookends.

I still think TB starts day 1. Cyrus had a good practice, by all accounts, and Saban has a crush on him. But I'm sure Saban/Smart can tell that TB is someone that makes your team better by being on the field.

I tend to agree but someone would be to get to jump on me for that. I mean Dre and Dee both started as freshman and I believe TB is better than both coming out of HS. Does not mean he will end up better but he has the ability. Plus he was here all spring which will help. I honestly think if MH was an EE he would be there right beside TB for a possible starter.
It going to be unfair the next few years with players like TB, MH and Hootie out there.

Where the hell did Tomlinson come from. I know he knows how to use leverage due to wrestling. Just never thought it would be him starting out of all of the guys weve had.

My observations from fan day:
DISCLAIMER: It's pretty negative
1. This is my 6th fan day in a row, I know no one wants to hear this, but I feel confident in saying that none of our current QBs are on the level of AJ (keep in mind I saw AJ in each of the last 5 fan days including his true freshman year). None were able to consistently put the ball on the money and on time to the correct WR the way AJ did. There were also fewer attempts at deep and intermediate passes than in previous years
2. Sims and Coker performed the best out of the QBs. I'd give Sims a slight edge though he appears to lack touch. Bateman was ok but was absolutely unable to throw tight spirals during the ~45 minutes when it rained.
3. I've never seen so many dropped balls. I'm sure this was partly due to the rain, but it was something that I noticed before it even started raining. WR, RB, TE; no one was immune. Far more than in previous years unfortunately.
4. In the one DB drill I watched, they went in the following order: TB, EJ, Cyrus, Sylve, Marlon, Avarett (Mo Smith was sitting it out)
5. Despite TB going first in drills, Cyrus and Sylve were working with 1st team, TB and Marlon 2nd team (EJ was sitting it out)
6. There were a lot of different combinations, but appeared LC and Geno were Safeties in base with Geno sliding to Star in Nickel and Perry coming in at Safety. Found this surprising since Jarrick had Star locked down last year. Not sure if Jarrick was nicked up.
7. Dillon Lee was the main one popping people.
8. JK Scott looked very good with most punts 50-55 yards with good hang-time. Also had a couple 40-45 yards.
9. Unlike previous years, I focused exclusively on QBs and WRs so I don't have anything to report on DL or OL
10. I always like noting who is out front on the 40 yard sprints at the end of practice. Among QBs, RBs, and LBs surprisingly it was Cooper Bateman. Among WRs and DBs it was consistently Cooper and TB
Taking into account A-day and today, I think the offense is going to be more run-oriented than the last couple years. Hopefully the OL can be molded into a bunch of maulers. I would also look for the passing game to be more horizontal than vertical.

Jarrick should've never been star IMO. The Okla game showed that. He didn't have the coverage ablility.

I just hope we don't waste all this talent we have at the skill positions. We could light teams up if we tried to.
What'd you see from Coker, if you could go a little more in depth? It was raining, so I almost instantly throw out QBs practice performances in the rain, but anything sounds good.

I think it depends on who we play. Remember Lane running very heavy against us when he was at Tenn. Hell it worked. The game was very close and that team sucked.

While it was raining for about 45 minutes in the middle, there was about 30 minutes in the beginning and end of practice where it wasn't raining
Indecision on where to go with the ball, checking down a lot (was the case with all the QBs), a handful of inaccurate throws. In general there'd be a couple of good throws followed by a bad one and I don't remember any great throws. Maybe it's Jimbo's fault for hyping him up so much. I saw a QB with definite talent but just didn't see the true elite talent I think many of us were hoping for.
And yes, I know, he's only been with the team a couple months, but (and I hate to keep coming back to this) AJ's talent was evident on fan day in '09. Despite only being with the team a couple months, he was regularly making deep and sideline throws that were on time and on the money.

Reed's suspension and Robinson's move to NT due to Ivory's suspension bumped him up to 1st string.

Is Cornwell #12 in the video you posted of the QBs and WRs?
If so, he has a really nice throwing motion/release. I like #12's mechanics the best by far.

I think he has the elite talent, but as we said, it's all potential. He's not a finished product. If he gets a lot of game experience and good coaching, you'll start to see what he can become.

Yeah, Cornwell is #12.

Ahh completely forgot about that.

quote:what exactly are you basing this on? sheppard has been probably been the most consistent player in the spring (all the successful spring game runs went right behind him and brown), was fine last year for a first year starter (he wasnt the one letting aj get sacked every other play against Oklahoma), and seems to me like is the most firmly entrenched guy on the line, except maybe kelly. hill very well could be superior, but i dont think ive ever seen anything to make me think that at this point
Grant Hill is just straight up better than Austin Shepard. Im sorry but Shepard is a mediocre football player

I can only imagine he's referring to the season Shep had a year ago. Mediocre? I don't know, but it wasn't close to good.

No.

However is Stryker lined up on Shep more often, he would have.

Agreed.
And I'll go ahead and stop you before you turn all of that into me "hating" on Shep. I'm just saying, he's not very good. Maybe he turns it around this year. Hopefully so.

How many people on this team do you think is mediocre? What exactly is mediocre to you.

I guess for some it is preference. I prefer Hill over AS. I also hate that Lindsey transferred out because I liked our OL better with him at center than Kelly. I also not excited about AK either. By again we all have our preferences and none of us get paid what the staff does to make the decisions.
