Lane Kiffin Addresses Sam Leavitt's Accuracy Issues, Explains What LSU Must Do To Help

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin was asked during Sunday's Zoom call about quarterback Sam Leavitt's inconsistent accuracy in Saturday's 32-24 loss to Ole Miss and what the Tigers can do to help him get back on track.

Kiffin pointed to Leavitt missing practice time last week, including the team's third-down and red-zone preparation, as well as the pressure he faced from Ole Miss' defensive front.

"It didn't help missing practice last week," Kiffin said. "He actually missed third-down, red-zone day. You know, the timing of those routes. I believe that practice matters, so that didn't help him."

Kiffin also praised Leavitt's competitiveness and said the Tigers must do a better job protecting their quarterback moving forward.

"I love Sam's competitiveness. I love that he put us in a position to win the game, taking us down there, where we settled for the field goal," Kiffin said. "We've got to play better around him. We've got to protect him better."

Leavitt finished the game 16/27 for 158 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown.

From my perspective, I've only seen an average arm in Sam and he seems a bit slow in pulling the trigger giving me the impression he is not very confident in his throws. I hope he gets better.

I don't think Sam was Kiffin's first choice at QB this year, but I do see him getting dramatically better throughout the season. I think things are on the verge of clicking for him.

Need to see what Clark can do this weekend. He can throw the deep ball better than SL. We have to take the top off the secondary, so they do not play up close to stop the run. SL look nervous to me and made bad decisions and missed open receivers.

he calls out the OL here, he should've said something about SL setting his feet and make accurate passes. Maybe he is trying to take the heat off of him a bit. But SL has to make accurate throws and get his feet set.
