ESPN College Football writers recently picked 'season-defining games' in 2025 for every team in their way-too-early top 25 rankings.

For LSU, writer Chris Low picked the season opener at Clemson as the Tigers make or break game next season:
quote:

8. LSU Tigers

2024 record: 9-4, 5-3 SEC

Season-defining game: Aug. 30 at Clemson

The winds of restlessness are blowing swiftly in Baton Rouge as Brian Kelly opens his fourth season as coach. The key word here is "opens" because LSU has opened every season under Kelly with a loss, which makes the Aug. 30 opener at Clemson all the more important. LSU needs to make a major push for the playoff this season, and more specifically, probably needs to make the CFP to take the heat off Kelly and get the program headed in the right direction. LSU's past three openers were a 27-20 defeat last season to USC (which lost six games) and two losses to Florida State. The SEC schedule is daunting enough, and although winning at Clemson is never an easy task, LSU has Florida at home two weeks later and then a trip to Ole Miss to close out a challenging September. -- Chris Low
As for Clemson, who ranks just ahead of LSU at No. 7 on the way-too-early top 25, writer David Hale picked their Nov. 14 matchup at Louisville.

Hale's reasoing for not picking the season opener against LSU is that Clemson was able to survive a beat down by Georgia in the season opener last season and still win the ACC and make the playoff.

Terrible Scheduling for LSU, we Play in the SEC we don't need to prove anything , just Win the League. Schedule NC State, Baylor, Marshall, or Wyoming ... No need to have Clemson, Florida State or Ohio State on our Schedule.

Especially when you will end up facing them in the playoffs if we make it. Why play the bastards twice?

If we had won the last 3 years nobody would be saying this

We could lose Clemson but play well the rest of the season and get in. I just think for the sanity of everyone, we need a BIG week 1 win. Just can't have a shite loss at the end of the season.

It completely deflates any excitement to lose right out of the gate. Can’t understate the importance of winning that game, even if it were to be nichols.

Nope... LSU can not afford to lose to Clemson.

Beat Clemson and cheer for them to win the ACC.

This is no surprise. It's what happens when we keep scheduling big games to start the season and then keep losing...all of them.

I jokingly told myself "the opener" before even reading the article. ??

Well, he’s right. Kelly can’t seem to win those. That’s the huge hurdle for him.

They're right. Lose to Clemson and it's going to be extremely tough to make the playoffs and the negativity will crank up to another notch. At some point Kelly has to win a big game and stop living off of a win vs Bama 4 years ago.

Losing that game only matters to the fans because we’ve lost what…. 4 straight openers? You can still make the playoffs even losing another. Win that game and you still have a tough road schedule.

It sets a tone for the rest of the season, so it matter to the team and the fans.

2024 Florida State? Way too early is just that because Clempsun may not be that good...or maybe we aren't. First game will set a tone for both but it will define neither

Can we afford the $51.7 million buyout at the end of the season?

May not have to. Word on the street Trump is a huge LSU fan says he loves him some Neck. Maybe Elon can find some Nudes on him. LOL!

We???? How much of the $51.7M buyout is yours?

Good one. Usually the people that are shouting the loudest to buy a coach out are the ones spending other peoples money. Not that I’m helping pay Kelly’s contract either.
