During his Monday press conference, Brian Kelly was asked by Michael Cauble about managing expectations with the offense this season as a follow-up to his question from Saturday night...
quote:

"I guess what I was trying to say more than anything is that from an offensive standpoint, we know what we have as a team," Kelly said.

"I'll give you an example, and maybe I shouldn't even do this, but I'm going to do it anyway. I walked into the post-game locker room with our coaches. As you can imagine, our defensive coaches were pretty happy. Our offensive coaches were really reserved, and perhaps they were expecting to get the paint peeled off the room."

"This is how you win games. You have to manage games. And this one we managed. Last year, it was the exact opposite against Florida. And we lost that game. This was about managing the game, and at the end of the day, my job is to win football games for LSU. And that's how we had to win the game."

"I know it didn't look the way it wants to be, but trust me, that offense is going to have to score a ton of points sometime during the year, and we are going to have to turn that loose because our defense might just not play as well as they have been playing.

"We have a great defense. When we get into games like that, I'm going to make sure that we minimize any of the mistakes that could be made on offense."

You can't just turn on an offensive explosion. Translation when you need the offense to drop 40 and they come up short Kelly will say the offense just couldn't turn on the big plays.

I would like to see backup QBs play this week to see how the offense looks like with mobile QBs.

That would require an entirely different playbook in order for it to work properly but I would love to see it

The thing is we don’t have (and should not have) all the info Kelly and his staff do. They should not come out Thursday before the game and tell us Nuss has a torso injury and we are going to be on a pitch count. They should not tell us and Florida he just can’t cut loose with the long ball and we are going to have to make do with running the ball a bunch this week.
So everybody get off Kelly’s azz. We are 3-0, not 0-3. Enjoy it. We have a top 5 team

What does punting instead of going for it have to do with an inept offense

Yeah he doesn’t do himself any favors with how he communicates in the heat of the moment. I think the offense is working through two things: OL development both individually and collectively, and Nuss being hampered/limited in some way. Then you also have a new WR group struggling through formation and pre snap stuff. The OL may not let this offense be great, but I do think it will improve as the year goes on.
