LSU head coach Jay Johnson spoke with reporters on Monday and was asked about Gavin Guidry, who has yet to pitch this season due to a back injury.

Johnson said Guidry is still working his way back, but they don't want to rush him.
quote:

"There are benchmarks every day, and he has to hit the benchmarks to go to the next step," Johnson said. "I want to pitch him badly, but I’m not going to put him in a position where we go out one time and go backwards, especially now at this point in the season."
When asked whether or not redshirting him was an option, Johnson said the hope is to get him back to this season.
quote:

"We are trying to get him back this season. If it comes to a point where that’s what we need to look at, then we’ll do that."

"There’s a balance of doing right by the player and doing what’s best for the program."

"But there are actual benchmarks that have to be hit, and we didn’t hit them last week, so we kind of reset and restart. But I'm very hopeful that we will be able to use him this weekend. I just can’t answer that until Thursday."

Backs are terrible to predict. That position is tough on the back. Look at his pitching from last year on how he finishes.

If he comes back this weekend it’ll still take him a few weeks to “knock the rust off” & be comfortable on the mound. Especially the SEC series we have coming up. Really sucks losing a preseason AA pitcher.

I think it’s time to give up on Guidry for this year anyway.
