Exactly what this generation is all about! I had a kid stand over a receiver after he made a play that would have given us the win. He was penalized and the other team scored! No matter how much you coach these kids their entitlement and modeling behavior always shows.

I agree but the pros and colleges are modeling for this younger generation. Parents don't correct it and even encourage it so it is never going to be corrected.

You could see the coach running over there to stop him and send him to first, but by that point he had already abandoned the baseline and removed his equipment. Absolutely horrible way to lose. Hopefully he will be able to laugh at it by the 10 yr reunion, but that's got to be gut-wrenching if that kid is Sr.

If I was his teammate I would have know the rules. Who’s in the dug out who knows the rules? The kids came out and no one stopped them til it was too late. Tough but right call. Lesson in life….. finish before celebrating!

IMO, that's a coaching error. He's a kid and I'm sure doesn't know all of the rules. An adult coach should have directed the kid to first immediately.

When I was 12 years old (early 1990s) my team was in the semifinals. I was up to bat in the bottom of the last inning, bases loaded, two outs, tie score. I had a 3-1 count and the third base coach called me over and said "if you get ball 4, you must touch first base. The game isn't over until you touch first." I walked. On my way to first, the first base coach (my dad) is celebrating and grabs me. I pushed him off to make sure i made it to first without getting called out.

In the championship we had to beat the #1 seed twice because we came out of the losers' bracket. We did..... And now you know the rest of the story.

Bad call. Not even a rule on a base on ball award. It is a dead ball.

A walk is not a dead ball, a HBP or Balk is a dead ball. The batter is allowed to advance to first without fear of being called out as well as additional runners that are 'forced' by the batter advancing, but the ball is live. Which is why any well coached team will be coached to run to first on a walk, especially on a passed ball or wild pitch because the defense tends to be lax and often times an additional base can be taken. This is especially true for 12U to HS. The rule here is 5.08(b) which the umpires decided the batter abandoned the basepath and removed equipment before proceeding to first base. That rule expressly covers this situation and the umpires appeared to have made the right call.

"without fear of being forced out", obviously he can be called out for refusing to advance to first or traveling beyond the awarded base.
