The close pronunciation of 'paddle' and 'pedal' confused the contestants. Sean mistakenly said 'paddle' on his guess at the 43 second mark when he knew it was pedal. He just misspoke. Michelle and Crystal thought Sean said 'pedal', which is why they didn't attempt it.
