For me it's a clear as this:
For better or worse ... If you did not attend the school that you are a fan of then you are a sidewalk fan ... plain and simple.

Those people can go frick themselves. If they were such big fans of the school they would have made sure they had the grades to get in instead of fricking off. We deal with this shite sometimes with students from Texas.
At Vandy you are looking at around 8K undergrad and a super selective standard.
The university's undergraduate programs are highly selective: in 2012, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions accepted 14.2% of applicants, thus making Vanderbilt one of the most selective universities in the United States and the most selective university in the state of Tennessee. In its most recent annual comparison of admissions selectivity, The Princeton Review gave Vanderbilt a rating of 99 out of 99.

Yeah but nobody is a die hard Vandy fan ... that's an oxymoron.

No one grows up a Vandy fan. But it doesn't change my opinion. If you weren't smart enough to get into your favorite school, you should be a fan of the school you did get in to.
This doesn't include financial aspects.

They do but I will agree they are not numerous. They are pretty dedicated tho.

To me it does ... if you are going to a major university let's use Ole Miss because you couldn't afford to get into Notre Dame, you should be a Ole Miss fan first and a Notre Dame fan second.
The only exception to this is if you attend some small school, private school, ivy league that really don't have sports teams ... i.e. you go to Millsaps but you grew up and Ole Miss and therefor you continue to be a Ole Miss fan.

What about guys that join the military out of high school, sidewalk?
What else would you call them but sidewalk fans?
There are only two categories...sidewalk fan and fan(alumni/students)

Um FANS. I know some students at major Div 1 schools that don't care for athletics, don't like "student" athletes, etc. Are those students more of a fan than someone that never attended a major school and love that school's athletic programs?
And like another poster said, if it weren't for "sidewalk" fans then a lot of stands would be half full, a lot of schools wouldn't make money off merchandise sells, etc. I promise you those schools, coaches, athletes, etc LOVE sidewalk fans. Sidewalk fans bring in A LOT of money. I'm pretty sure alumni/students aren't bringing in all the money to Athletic Programs.... that's why conferences are expanding to get more $$$$$.

I'm an SEC sidewalk fan. I don't really care for any team. Also didnt go to an SEC school for college.
Did graduate college though so I passed that test at least.

If there weren't sidewalk fans, most games wouldn't be televised.

If you're a fan of a team, and their school offers the degree you want, then THERE IS NO EXCUSE for not attending that school. If you're willing to drive 100s of miles and pay for high priced tix to support the team then you should have been willing to sacrifice out of state tuition and attend the school you love, and have no right to talk shite to fans of other schools who did make that sacrifice. Just my opinion.
You say this, but there's really only 3-4 SEC universities I'd even consider attending. No reason to pay that tuition, if you can get the same quality education from the local community college.

What if you have the chance to go to a better school that also doesn't have a football program?

I don't consider that a sidewalk fan.
Went to a basketball only A-10 school for my undergrad, and a basketball only Big East school for grad school. Never was forced to compromise my fanhood. Still buy season tickets and donate as a booster.

It's a distinction without a difference.
Whether or not you have a degree from the school you cheer for doesn't say anything about how you support your team. You might as well divide fans into two categories by age or geography for all the sense it makes, and I say this as an alumnus.

A strict definition of sidewalk fan is someone who never attended a class at the University they support.
However, I do have some leniency in "my" definition, for whatever it's worth. I think anyone who grew up in a State, had parents/family that went to the University, attended and/or has graduated from the University, and has lifelong connections to that school is not a sidewalk fan.
Before heading to Alabama, I was actually a pretty big Florida State fan. My parents had both graduated from FSU, and we made it a point as a family to go to games annually, and watch every game, every Saturday. I don't think that qualified me as a "sidewalk" fan at the time.
However, and I can't stress this enough, there is a bond that actual students/alumni have, that others do not. I'm sorry, it's a fact. Spending 4+ years somewhere, living and breathing the culture and atmosphere of the school on a daily basis forms a deep bond that I don't think can be replicated any other way.
The University of Alabama gave me the educational foundation, lifelong pledge brothers and friends, and experiences that will last me a lifetime. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.
The only people that have a problem with "sidewalk" fans are usually alumni. I personally don't, but can understand those who feel that their attachment isn't as strong as theirs. If they want to come and support Tuscaloosa economically, by all means. If Stadiums were limited to "Alumni Only," the atmosphere wouldn't be near what it normally is.
