The following scenario is what pisses me off: someone grows up rooting for a certain team, and when it comes time to go to college they don't have the grades to get into their favorite school. So they go to a different school and still root for their childhood school, even though said school shunned them and their current school embraced them.

It seems really weird to me to use words like "shunning" and "embracing" to describe the college admissions process, which is something I think of as a business transaction. I don't feel "shunned" by an employer if I'm turned down after an interview.

However, and I can't stress this enough, there is a bond that actual students/alumni have, that others do not. I'm sorry, it's a fact. Sending 4+ years somewhere, living and breathing the culture and atpmosphere of the school on a daily basis forms a deep bond that I don't think can be replicated any other way.

The University of Alabama gave me the educational foundation, lifelong pledge brothers and friends, and experiences that will last me a lifetime. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.

Funny thing about that is more and more universities are offering online courses/distance learning courses for credit/degrees. Since about 2005 more and more students are going that route considering the technology. They pay the same tuition, fee's etc but don't have to attend classes on campus.

So a fan that never went to college can actually be more of a fan than some alumni that paid tuition to the school.

Actual sidewalk fans don't bother me for the most part, as long as they grew up in the state and aren't douchebags. Everyone needs sidewalk fans.

Those people can go frick themselves. If they were such big fans of the school they would have made sure they had the grades to get in instead of fricking off. We deal with this shite sometimes
with students from Texas.

Embraced them?A university is a business. It doesn't embrace you,it sells you a service.Saying you can't do business with one while still being a fan of another is a myopic view.

So does this mean that all the athletes who played at the school but didn't graduate are "Sidewalk" fans? And by the way, you can't blame a High School kid for his parents not having prepared financially to spend $150K on a college education. It's not always about grades. I know of several instances where kids simply didn't have the opportunity to attend their college of choice.

A university represents many things to many people. As stated here, it's a business and that business isn't solely based on education and/or preparing you for life. Therefore, it takes all types of fans to make the machine work. How many seats do you think would be filled in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night if we only let alumni in?

For me it's not just alumni. Some people went to LSU, screwed up, and couldn't get cumulative GPA back to 3.0 even after they tightened up. Half my friends are like that.

I have memories of LSU not just as a sports fan, but from going to school there.

I don't see it from some elitist angle that only alumni are the ones the matter. But in my experience, the ones that are alumni seem to respect the other SEC schools a little more than the shite talker who only has memories of LSU as a football fan that gets loaded on campus during the day.

Like it or hate it, most here agree with that. No matter what school you're talking about.

I see what you are saying but the shite talkers are just referring to athletics, doubt if they are talking trash on the academic side of things. They are bragging about sports which some of those "sidewalk" fans are season ticket holders, boosters, etc.

The Waltons have connection to Mizzou, Sam Walton graduated from Mizzou. Bud Walton have an arena on Arkansas' campus and didn't graduate there. Have a building on Missouri Southern's campus, etc. Are the Waltons sidewalk fans even though they didn't graduate from Arkansas?? I mean they don't have the "college" experience of being a Razorback.

And I'm sure we can name a lot of other BIG time boosters like the Waltons that are involved with universities more than most alums. They support love both Mizzou and Arkansas.

It can also be location, it's not hard to get into LSU. Went there, just don't like Baton Rouge.
