It's really only an issue if the family member prefers viewing LED vs an LCD/IPS screen.
As far as whether it matters technologically, not really. As long as it has the right connections for the cable box, you should be good.

If you got the right adapter ( this one works for my M1 Mini to my 2008 Samsung plasma), there may be a compatibility issue with the HDMI cable.
Could be a lot of things though.
