Based on what I’ve heard, I’m pretty sure Pat Dye was the choice had Dooley left.

I had to look it up. It says he declined the offer in December 1980. It would have been interesting if he would have staid to coach the Sugar Bowl. Crazy to think we could have had Pat Dye at UGA vs Dooley at Auburn. Maybe Bo Jackson would have gone to UGA.

Bo is from Alabama. If Dooley had gone to Auburn, he likely would have been recruiting Bo to go there. UGA had Herschel. It’s doubtful that Bo would have come to be second fiddle.

On another note, Dooley interviewed for and was offered the OU job in 1965.
