I'll never understand why we settled on Goff. I guess different days. I assume it was because he was a great recruiter. I don't know about Haffner's recruiting ability but he did some pretty good stuff w/ James Jackson and Wayne Johnson. Goff had some really bad DC hires, but some good OCs.

I really don't think this is correct.Vince was on leave of absence to pursue his Senate run and his successor was left up to a search committee and Larry Walker (BOR member and big time influential Alumnus) pushed hard for Goff.

Vince did not want or recommend Goff for HC. Goff was only a coach because he could recruit better than anyone. Goff was forced on the program by boosters.

Coach Haffner and Coach Lewis were much more experienced and on the staff. Goff wasn’t super well liked, was a position coach, and I’m pretty sure never was a coordinator at any level. I can sum it up that he didn’t command authority or respect from the players. The discussion among the players was Dooley didn’t want Coach Haffner or Lewis to come in and do better than he was doing. Football was really changing then.

I met Erk in Statesboro after he retired and asked him why he never pursued UGA. His words were, "When I left, I left. I got everything right here. But how about them dawgs".

I think he would have and should have got the job at UGA, but he was happy in Statesboro and he was treated like royalty.

My mom's cousin played at UGA from 79-81. He told me he did not like Goff. I won't go into all the specifics he told me because it's just hearsay. He said he didn't like or respect him because he acted like he was a holy roller on Sunday and a didn't have the same persona M-F. During the Goff tenure he decided not to go back to any of the games when they invited former players on the sideline. Again that's just one player's opinion of Goff. Bill Lewis or Haffner would have been more qualified. The Goff teams were not disciplined and I lived next door to one of the guys that got arrested for credit card theft at Kmart.

It all makes 1992 more confusing, just imagine 3 or 4 more points?

That’s all correct.

In addition to not attending any games where former players were recognized, Goff also sent his kids to Auburn, but says he has no ill will towards UGA.
