Apparently, Wes has wanted it from the jump and it kind of makes since given that we are eliminating space around the stadium for field equipment. Too, not sure how it came across on TV but the outfield was in ROUGH shape during the Supers simply due to the beating it has taken for 30+ games since February; nothing to really do to mitigate that from a turf mgmt perspective.
I HATE the way turf looks but supposedly it creates cleaner, more consistent hops and reduces baseball injury due to a more consistent surface. Wes apparently wants it for those reasons and because it’s the preferred playing surface of recruits (turf has become the standard at a lot of travel ball facilities) and it allows Wes to hold prospect camps during the Summer (we apparently haven’t been able to do that at the scale Wes wants because the field has to be redone every Summer).
Ultimately, if it’s the trade we have to make to get 1. A winning product on the field and 2. A modernized ballpark worth sitting in then I’m not going to be happy about it but I’ll deal with it for the greater good

I hear ya, but natural turf and dirt work just fine for just about every MLB team. Don't really care what the travel ball teams play on...if you're a good player, it shouldn't really make that much of a difference. And I mean is someone really going to commit to a school based on playing surface? Come on.
Our field looked 1000x better than the atrocity in Knoxville. It's a fricking joke and I can't believe we are going to put that shite in Athens.
I think it's pretty obvious we don't need to change our playing surface to have a good team. Or at least it should be.
Not trying to argue with you per se, just pushing back at that line of thinking if it is really coming from Wes.

MLB teams also have ample space and full time staffs devoted to upkeep of their facilities. UGA has had about as good a staff as a college program is going to get in that regard but they’re losing all of their equipment space with the 3B side expansion.
Don’t disagree about ability to play but it’s clearly a part of recruiting conversations and it’s a consideration among guys deciding between, frankly, marginally different engrams in the SEC/ACC. More than anything, I think this is about being able to host and try out prospects en masse during the offseason the way Kirby does. Get guys familiar with our campus/facility and reduce time on the road split across 5 coaches by evaluating them here.
I also hate the way it looks. No argument there

The room issue makes sense, but still man idk. Find the damn room somewhere. Do anything to avoid turning us into a trashy arse field turf program.

So 2018 is the last time an NCAA title came to Athens.
SEC schools are outperforming us every year in programs outside of football. Auburn won golf this year. Florida won track this year. Texas A&M won women’s tennis. Lsu won gymnastics this year. Arkansas even won a title. That’s just the 2024 school year. I could go on.

How about you move on instead. Get your sidewalk fandom out of here. We enjoy our sports program top to bottom. We have more competitive teams year in and year out in like 10 sports than almost every program in the nation. GFY

I remember when this used to be true. But the panties scandal got our AD fired and it hasn’t been the same since.
You can’t tell me other SEC schools aren’t outperforming our athletics programs. It’s clear as day when all the schools around us are winning natties and we aren’t.
We used to be known for the country club sports.

This was last year….

the Bulldogs had 17 of its 21 teams finish in the top 20 of their respective sports’ rankings during the 2022-2023 season. Moreover, nine of those 17 finished in the top 10.
Georgia Athletics’ nine top 10 finishers were football, which placed first, men’s indoor track and field, which placed second, women’s tennis, which placed third, men’s tennis and women’s indoor track and field, which both placed fifth, equestrian, which placed sixth, men’s outdoor track and field, which placed seventh, softball, which placed ninth and women’s outdoor track and field, which placed 10th.
The other top 20 finishers include men’s swim and dive, which placed 12th, men’s and women’s golf, which placed 14th, women’s swim and dive, which placed 16th and soccer, volleyball, women’s basketball and gymnastics, which all placed 17th.
That puts us 7th Nationally in the Learfield Directors Cup, and we don’t play near as many sports as Stanford, USC and Texas
You about done now?

Are you seriously gloating about final rankings?
It’s been 6+ years since any of our programs won a NCAA National Championship.
But keep enjoying those top ten finishes. You are starting to sound like Tennessee.

We won 2…back to back national championships in the main sport. We just went 1 game away from CBWS. We made the final four of NIT with some great recruits coming in for basketball.
I don’t expect to win a national championship every year, but I really like where our program is and where it is headed.
Keep being a sidewalk fan. You sound more like a GT nerd that has given up on all their programs

There’s been a ton of turnover in our athletics programs in the last 5 years, so I like seeing our AD take steps to improve what we have and get us back to where we used to be, winning natties in sports outside of football.
And if anyone has a right to bitch it’s me. When I was in school I was attending tennis matches, softball, baseball, basketball, gymnastics - all of it. I never made it to soccer or volleyball, or track. But I digress. I’m not a sidewalk fan.

Offense looking good seems like. Any scuttlebutt on pitchers we are in the mix on?

Aside from the bullpen arms we’ve added, we are apparently going to sign some bigger named arms before it’s all said and done (Wes basically confirmed that they’re not public commits yet but we have guys in the hook). Dasher says we are going to sign upwards of 18 portal guys again to help bridge the incoming freshman class.
If I was a betting man, I’d wager Barlow from Clemson and Sam Dutton from LSU are possible big names who could end up here

We were 3rd in the SEC last year (2022-2023 behind Florida and Tennessee) in the Director's Cup and 7th in the nation. So, yes, there are some SEC teams outperforming us, but when you talk overall athletics, we are pretty darn good.
Learfield Director's Cup Standings 2022-2023
We are not looking quite as good right now for this year, though.
