Well, Brooks surprised us all with Track and did the uber-Georgia thing with Softball.

Guess we will see how it plays out.

Sport that nobody cares about? Grand slam hire

Sport that very few people care about but some kinda do? Laziest hire imaginable on the face of the earth

Same as Evans. Same as McGarity. I'm not writing Brooks off by any means yet since I've been very pleased with everythign about him so far up until I read this post, btu this doesn't inspire optimism for that program. I don't understand why we more than any other program it seems simply HAVE to either hire from within or hire someone with school ties. Is it really THAT hard to just do a natioanl search and get the best person available? It's obviously not since he JUST DID IT with track, so I know it's something he's capable of.

I watched the Skip Bertman SEC Storied this weekend. He was set to be head corch at UM. They went a "different direction". Bertman took a 50% pay cut to be head guy at LSU....the rest, as they say, is history.

So have hope!

I guess what is bothersome to me about this kind of hire is it basically relies on the belief that a guy like Baldwin has been in the program all along but has just been held back by the previous coach. Like, has he just been sitting on ideas this whole time he wasn’t going to use until his time came? Was his predecessor just not listening to him?

I figured a team that is capable of making the WCWS but can’t ever do anything when they get to OKC might try to take a step forward. Seems counterintuitive that someone from the previous regime has simply been holding out on the program and greatness has been right there all along.

But maybe I’m just being over simplistic.

So I guess UGA just wanted another pseudo yes man at AD.

Enh, if we're gonna hire someone named Baldwin, we should have gone with Adam. Animal Mother would be a fun coach.

Not to "name drop" but we are friends with the family as his daughter and my daughter are good friends (in the same grade at the same school)

I think he is an excellent choice. Bias aside. The current team loves him, an amazing recruiter and has been with the program almost 13 years.

He will do a great job.

As a few of you know I am an avid fan of softball and follow LSU and UGA Softball as passionately as I do football (if not more)

I think he will have UGA in the National Title hunt every year. Georgia is stacked in High School softball Talent. Just keep the talent here and he will win.
Fields being a perfect example.

I’ve been close to the program the last year and I agree with everything you said. Tony is a top notch guy who will do well in recruiting and should be a guy that the best assistant coaches want to work for. It may not be a flashy hire but I really think he’ll have us in contention for OKC year in and year out.

Think he can get the facilities improved?

Honestly getting facilities significantly improved that aren’t football related is a huge uphill battle, but softball should be right up there with a new tennis indoor in terms of facility renovations.
