Theories On Why UMASS Was Able To Run So Well

I haven't seen any replays or film breakdown yet, but my recollection of events as I watched them unfold was that UMASS run plays had 8 blockers in the box to our 5 tacklers, making it a numbers game. To make matters worse, once their runners got through that trash to the second level, we simply weren't wrapping up and making tackles. Making contact, but not tackles. This has been a common theme in many games this year for us. I don't put this on the DL, they were simply outblocked in the schematics of football, but those second level guys entrusted to make the tackle simply weren't making the tackles.
It will be an interesting Brooks Austin breakdown this week.
Georgia Tech will do the same thing.

Kirby does this against lesser teams
Vs good teams he matches the blockers more closely from what I have seen

Also, I know it's poor form to bitch about refs in a blowout win, but UMASS was getting away with some pretty severe holding.

Worked on stopping techs offense all week

Someone mentioned the formations they were running were illegal but IDK. There were a shite ton of holds too.

I thought about that too but they are pretty similar offenses I think, so preparing for Tech should have helped with this game.
I think our dline just got worked and we couldn't tackle. They had good misdirection plays too. Those have given us problems all year. Linebackers playing a step slow still which is jarring to see. Seems like zero improvement has been made with this defense.

TLDR
It’s obviously Bobo’s fault.

This. Plus Beck sucks on defense.

Nobody watched so no harm.

Why was the defense's best tackling game the first game of the year? It's been downhill every since.

My theory is based on something Kirby said in a press conference mid-season about not practicing as physical as they used to, due to injury and depth concerns.

Kirby and schu need to study how venables deals with mobile QBs. His teams always look prepared and they play super fast against them. Our defense always looks hesitant and unsure. I bet venables just makes it super simple somehow

Formations.
On almost every play, their left tackle was an eligible receiver on the end of the LOS and their slot WR was ineligible. We had someone covering the slot WR even though he was ineligible on most plays, and I think this is what gave UMass so many alignment advantages.

Please explain. I want to learn.

They ran out of this formation a lot today. The slot WR is ineligible. He is covered up by the WR at the bottom of the screen.
You can also see two RBs and a TE lined up in the wing on the offense's right. Those are their five skill players on the field on this play. This means their left tackle is the last man on the formation at the top of the screen, technically making him an eligible receiver, although I don't ever remember him ever going out for a pass.
When UMass used this formation, there was zero reason to line up a defensive player across from the slot WR because he is not an eligible receiver, yet it seemed like we did every time. I think this helped them get a numbers advantage on some of their running plays.

Makes what we did seem even more stupid by our coaches not knowing to let that ineligible WR run free
