If she refuses to testify the prosecutor has no case.
I suspect it went someting like:
They had a fight and things done and said that they both regret. Kids. No excuse, but it is what it is.
They made up, and it was gforgoteen.
A year later they argue or have some kind of fallout and she threatens to come forward and ruin his football career. Trying to get in front of this he goes to the coaches and tells them what happened. They reported it to higher ups. She decides not to come forward and was using the incident as a threat from time to time. Because he came forward and admitted to it he got kicked off the team anyway.
That's a guess....but it seems I heard somewhere that he had admitted it to the coaches.
