NCAA Board of Governors has ruled that all divisions are to institute rules by January to take effect for Fall 2021 that allow student athletes to profit from their name image and likeness.

Stipulations include:
- Can appear in advertisements but cannot represent the school logo
- can sign endorsement deals with Nike, etc but again cannot involve school logo
- can sign autographs for money (pour one out for Todd and AJ)
- can be compensated for offering Summer camps and private lessons
- can have their names publicly attached to entrepreneurial ventures (this has actually been a problem for a lot of bright athletes who are working on app development but can’t publicly be associated with a business venture without losing eligibility)
- does not cover group licensing (so still unlikely to have an NCAA football video game unless players figure out how to unionize)

The only question that matters is can we bring our own items to picture day again? If so, I might actually start back going.

You might have to start paying for them.

It will be cheaper in college to get the guys autograph before they get too big.

That's true. There are a couple of businesses in metro Atlanta that have been getting the players leaving to do some signings at a relatively cheap price.

I got a Swift PSA authenticated mini helmet before Christmas for $45. I dont know how much one would be at the moment, but Im sure the market has gone up quite a bit with him being drafted early in the second.

How does this get regulated in recruiting. What’s stopping UGA, Bama, etc boosters from offering like 3000% above normal rate for a 5-star?

Well, endorsements at least are public and the recommendation is that students have to notify their compliance office of everything their doing to make sure its above board.

But there will never be any way to curb payments in recruiting, this just flushes some of it out. Above board, programs like Georgia and Bama are about to start selling personal brand-building in a big way on the trail.

Thing about big boosters is they’ll pay a recruit to go to their school but it usually comes in exchange for access and a feeling they’ve done their part to help the team. This Change makes it possible for local businessmen to do that AND turn a profit through some heretofore unavailable marketing strategies. Thing is, though, you don’t go promising endorsement deals to a 5* high school kid who could end up buried on the death chart at Bama or uga or Clemson or getting busted for underage drinking or weed possession. You’re going to invest in the current player who is a proven commodity with proven maturity when you’re putting them in a billboard or in a commercial.

So, I think you’re going to see some bagmen practices start to age out as the financiers realize they can start to have their cake and eat it too, just have to plant the long con.

Bagmen already provided money to kids for no financial return. Their only expectation is for a kid to play for their alma mater. Now bagmen (say a car dealer) can offer an unsigned player 100k to show up in the future to his car dealership to sign balls. We just legalized purchasing players. Am I missing something?
