You are correct, the A stands for Athens.
It used to be a trivia questions in a lot of classes in the business school.
Still folk lore without evidence.

I will bet 20 bit-Plaques right now that the mystery of the A has to do with the creation of the Georgia Board of Regents in 1932.

Why is that
I suppose it makes sense once the univserity system of ga was formed at that same time. It's not uncommon to see that kind of abbreviation elsewhere (UTEP, UAB, UCLA, etc) so I can see the board way back when putting the A on the end of us to designate the campus location.
as for why we have that and many other state schools do not, I have no idea.

Because the creation of the board fits suspiciously in the window we plotted with mascot dead-reckoning.
And because that's the type of things "boards" do. They each politicked their way to the top, and so now it's time for decrees! What better way to show how important and powerful they are than to add an "A" to UG with the pounding of a gavel?
Rinse repeat. It's the story o fcivilization

Jeff, while we're on the subject of mysteries do you know anything about the origin of the football player logo for the varsity? Someone told me a long time ago that it was fashioned after Fran Tarkenton but I've never found anything concrete on the subject one way or another.

I have no idea. Never really thought about it. Logo has some weird footwork so there’s got to be a story behind it though

So, in a way, GA is like lol, omg, etc but instead of just being shorthand for saving time from writing it all out, GA was also about conserving scarce writing supplies.

1800's was not the 800's
People were just the opposite in writing long letters to each other in beautiful penmanship. I have correspondence from my great grandparents back when they were teens and they wrote beautiful letters to each other the teens of today would do well to emulate.

So, it’s confirmed then. The abbreviation ‘UGA’ is not, I repeat, is NOT the 19th century equivalent of lol, omg, etc motivated by ink and feather supply conservation.
Thank you Mr. Holmes!

So instead you're just going to discriminate against the metabolically challenged?

Odd
Pixels are cheaper than pen and ink yet we abbreviate more
Just the left and the right dumbing down the middle.

Your ancestors weren't writing each other multiple times a day non-stop left and ritgjht. Because it was impossible.
So, it's pretty much 100% not odd at all.
Happy Trump Day, geezer face
