So what are the implications of postponing (or canceling???) spring practice?

So G-Day would normally have been April 18. If (and it's only an if) practice starts up March 31 (2 week delay), do you go ahead and have the game after 2 weeks of practice? Or can the entire spring practice period, including a potential G-Day game, be pushed into May? (May 2, anyone?)
If things get worse instead of better with COVID19, and we have no spring practice at all, then what? Do programs just pick it up in preseason? Seems that would hurt teams like UGA that are making significant changes to their offense, have a new QB, etc.
Anybody know of this situation happening previously?

I would guess they could move it around and stay within the rules of allowable spring practices with coaches.
I would also guess they would allow for a longer summer practice, with returning and EEs getting to report before fall enrollees, should this get worse and push out a couple months.
That is speculation of course. I am sure the NCAA will release updated guidelines at the appropriate time.
I can't recall anything like this happening. I was playing during 9/11 and we were not permitted any additional time with coaches outside the weekly allotment, but that was in season and didn't effect spring for new players that enrolled early.
I wonder what the EEs think of that. You give up your senior year of HS to get there early for spring and then it might be shut down....weird times

Seems like they could hold spring practice and quarantine as a team at the same time.

It turns out that the last time we've seen anything like this was during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Been reading some interesting stories about what happened back then: They had to stop the Stanley Cup finals in the middle of the series when a couple of players came down with flu. They also cancelled what was a huge boxing match for the time (Jack Dempsey versus some dude). Numerous high school and college football games were cancelled. Baseball was the biggest sport at the time and there were actually several dozen active and former players that died of flu...not to mention some umpires, sportswriters, and others.
Of course, that 1918-1919 flu was super nasty and unusual...especially because it had high mortality in people age 20 to 40. (Not to mention if you were a kid under 5 who caught it, you didn't have good odds either).
So we've actually seen these kinds of measures (cancelling sports on a wide scale) taken to contain an epidemic but it was 100 years ago so there's nobody around who remembers it first hand!
Isn't there a saying: "May you live in interesting times."

Yeah, it's the old Chinese curse. Fitting.

If they ever let us off this lockdown we will be right back on it again this fall.
Holidays canceled
Football canceled.
This isn’t about the virus. It’s about control conditioning. A precedent has been set.

I'd say the 2020 season is in serious jeopardy, experts are saying this will be a concern for a year or so

Maybe. But I'm still optimistic about resumption of fall practice in August. That's 5 months from now. A lot can change, for better or worse, over that period.

If (and that's a big if) this is under control and starting to ease up by June, I think the NCAA should allow teams to have their spring practice (with little full contact) in Late June/early July, then fall practice in august. Maybe move the season out a couple of weeks and start mid-September.
