and Bennett is the ace backup...

What do we do with Mathis?

Barring something going horribly wrong, Beck redshirts this year.

Then you have Vandagriff coming in down the road.

Daniels will be a junior next season, Beck a redshirt freshman or at worst a sophomore, and Vandagriff a true freshman.

Unless Mathis makes an amazing leap from what we saw against Arkansas, seems he would be the odd man out.

Can he play receiver? (BTW, who was that Arkansas quarterback years ago that decided he would make a better WR than quarterback?)

Matt Jones is the Arky guy. And honestly what happens with Mathis is what we mostly assumed when we signed him. Career back up.

I think if this season works out well that JT is cleared, proves to be a suitable starter, and Bennett backs up. Beck develops and Vandagriff stays committed and is the future.

I think we all thought before and now think again that is Mathis stays he stays on as a gadget QB or career back up. I just am not sure he can ever start here. Thats incredibly reactionary but just doesn't look like he's got a clear road even when one finally opened up for him even if it was too soon.

It was Matt Jones and he got drafted way too high by the Jags because he was a great athlete and then got cut when he got caught doing lines in his car in Fayatteville.

Unfortunately, I do think we'll see him start against Auburn. From what I understand, Daniels has struggled a bit in practice, and until he's cleared, coaches are going to continue giving Mathis 1st-team reps.

But I do think Mathis is a better player than we saw. Kirby alluded to this, too. Hopefully he figures it out in a hurry.

This. Not many QB's have excellent first ever games.

See I don't understand why we would need to reshirt Beck when you don't lose a year of eligibility due to covid anyway, why let him get some in game reps also.

I am guilty of overreacting just like everyone else, but this is the reasonable approach. After rewatching the game I am confident Mathis will likely end this season as a better player than Stetson. There's a reason he started on Saturday. Too bad none of us really got to see it.

Dwan's mistakes weren't preparation or talent. They were nerves combined with a team that was making a lot of dumb errors and getting few breaks. If he can calm down, he may yet end up as the best option for the Bulldogs.

That said, you can't sit Stetson without either a bad outing or multiple instances of Mathis proving he is ready for the pressure of being under center.

No redshirts this year, it's a free year.

Beck ain't close to ready. That's the only possible reason he didn't see action.

I was in Fayetteville this weekend and met Becks dad at Dickson Street Pub. We were the only UGA people in the joint. Nice guy and we talked a long time.

He told me Mathis was starting on Saturday and his son was #2. Daniels ran scout team last week. He felt like Carson would play a good bit if Mathis did well and they could split time. He did say that if Mathis struggled badly and we were in a dogfight that Kirby would go to Stetson over his boy.

It definitely appeared to be a decision made during the moment. Kirby needed the guy he knew could dig them out of the hole and move them down the field.

I don’t think Carson redshirts and he might be the best of the 4 we have right now but Kirby wasn’t going with the freshman after Mathis struggled us to 0 offensive points late in the 2nd quarter.

Never went through his progressions on the pick he threw.....locked on the whole time. Missed a big potential reception in the middle.

That hit rattled him. First time he has been hit since his senior year of high school....and the first time he has been hit by an SEC level defender.

I like the kid and he is a great feel good story but he is not the guy this year in my opinion on what I saw Saturday. Hope he proves me wrong as I've wanted a true DT QB starting in Athens for years.

I think you let Stetson take the first series and see what happens next. But, JT will have to play a good bit IMO.

I think he transfers if he doesn't play a lot this season.
