Here is what I found:

2 Fumbles in 2013, both lost (Mizz and Vandy)
1 Fumble in 2014, not lost (Auburn)
0 Fumbles in 2015.

Rushing touches: 2013 - 84, 2014 - 55, 2015 - 36.

Michel had five last year in about 200 carries. So that's one fumble in every 40 carries.

One fumble in about every 60 carries for Douglas.

The main problem with Douglas is that if there isn't a hole big enough to drive a truck through he loses yards.

I mean yeah, if the guy has a hole, he's a big dude who is powerful when he gets a full head of steam. There's a reason all of his highlights happen 5-10 yards downfield.

Watch any game last year. When the hole isn't immediately there, which it usually isn't against any decent team, he never gains yards. He has very limited vision and wiggle.

I appreciate his efforts, but if we're relying on him as a tailback in any significant way, we've got a problem.

Oh, I wasn't arguing against you. I agree he is not a feature back. I was just showing some of his highlights for general interest.

Brendon Douglas has done everything asked of him by the coaching staff. Without him we would have been in a world of hurt due to injuries the last 3 years. He could have gotten much more playing time at some other schools but he chose to stay here and do what he could. Don't know why some fans are so down on him.
Hence, I will thus say, he's a DGD. Forsooth.

His commitment to UGA is admirable but he is a major step down in talent, and he has had 2 of our most costly fumbles, thus we have concerns about having to rely on him.

Mainly because he starts slowly. Once he gets a full head of steam up he will run right over the opposition....or try to. Most of the truly great RBs make their living of starting quickly and building.

I honestly did not know how Douglas compared to anybody else fumble per carry wise, but I felt he might be getting an unfair rap in that regard. Don't misunderstand me.....there is no doubt he is not a great RB, but I'm not sure he is as bad as many think.

The fumble thing was amplified because of when he fumbled. But, if we only go by that, Michel and Chubb BOTH fumbled going into the endzone against Tech at crucial points in the game. Had those two gone for TDs we would have won the game, probably. (Chubb, I could live with and would blame Richt for. If IRRC, he had just peeled off a long run and was gassed. Richt should have taken him out of the game and givne him a breather. I am guessing he left him in to get the TD as a reward for the previous run. Bad decision, though)

Thanks for doing the legwork on this Broncothor. I looked but didn't see the stats on the fumbles.

I honestly had no idea. I just felt Douglas was getting a bad rep for being a fumble machine unjustly. We tend to forget the two fumbles came in his freshman year when he was put into a bad situation. Freshmen make mistakes. The crucial points of the game when he fumbled factored into the distrust we all got for him.

Well.....Mizzou and Florida both had pretty good defensive lines last year, though, but your point is spot on. He doesn't not have a fast start. It takes him awhile to get that head of steam going....but once he does....

To me that means he's disciplined and knows the playbook. You run where the gap is supposed to be.

Unfortunately with our previous OL's you have to freelance and run away from where you're supposed to go. Maybe he's just not very creative.

Also, Sony and Chubb have both had costly fumbles too....but nobody remembers those. And it was proven above that his fumbles per carry were less than Sony's.

I don't want to play the race card but I think some of you are uncomfortable with a white running back. Jus sayin'....

I don't think that's true. And I don't think anybody wants to see Douglas in the backfield taking the majority of the snaps. However, I also don't tighten up and worry that he is going to fumble when he is in the game, either. he is still an excellent choice late in the game when the defense is worn down and slower a bit. Let him get a full head of steam and plow them over. It's what he does best.

Oh for fricks sake. He averaged 3.9 ypc last year. That's straight up bad for a major college RB. It doesn't matter if he's purple. For comparison, Sony average 5.3. It's a huge drop-off.

I guarantee you Michel and Chubb also "know the playbook." They're just better at football than Douglas is.

Dude. If we had Christian MccAffrey back there you wouldn't hear a peep from anyone. The thing is, he's just not that good. Has nothing to do with him being white.

would you apply that same logic to Richard Samuel's RB abilities?

It's going to be a long game if we have to depend on Douglas for the majority of our carries. I love the kid and all that he has done for the university but it's a huge dropoff. I just hope Crowder or Holyfield are ready to pick up the slack.
