In UGA QB history?

Random question but it’s one I’ve thought about lately. Georgia has been spoiled recently with guys like Bennett IV, Murray and Lambert setting school and/or conference passing records.

Greene set an NCAA record for wins by a starting QB. When I think of clutch, he is the first that comes to mind when it comes to UGA starting QBs.

Where would you rank DG on the list and why?

IMHO it’s Stetson, Murray, Greene, Stafford.

Stafford was the most talented but didn’t accomplish all that much and his stats were good not outstanding.

Murray was similar to Stafford but had 4 full years vs 2 and a half and had the stats to back it up.

Greene was smart and accurate but based on what he was asked to do, I believe any of the QBs on this list could have done it.

Is probably closer to the worst QB in program history than he is to the best.

I agree with this, those Stafford teams under archived! Although his last two years were when UF had those crazy teams with Urban as HC. But it seemed like they would always lose a game they had no business losing..

we have most definitely not been spoiled by greyson lambert lol.

Greene is an interesting topic. In real time, you could make the case he was one of the 3 or 4 best QBs we'd ever had. Game manager, which was the style at the time, who wasn't gonna mak ea ton of mistakes or be the reason that you lost a game. Cool as a cucumber. Some MAJOR highlight reel throws that were as clutch as clutch can possibly be. Returned UGA to a place it hadn't been in several decades. Clean cut hometown kid. Just all around great story and great resume.

However, with each passing year that resume gets a little more...not "worse" exactly but passed over I guess. Directly after Greene you had DJ who although was only the main guy for one season clearly showed a much higher ceiling than greene ever did, and also won the SEC and POTY. AFter that you had a guy who probably underwhelemed due to the stratospheric expectations placed on him but still put up some really nice numbers here, led us to a #2 finish, and has been a terrific pro for over a decade. Not long after that you have a guy who one could argue as the best QB we've ever had and shattered many school and SEC records. A few yeras after that we had a steady even keeled dude who would again lead us to new heights by winning the SEC again, the Rose Bowl, and playing for a title. Then not long after that you've got stetson who started shaky but continued to get better and better and not only broked many qB records but to us to even NEWER highs.

So I guess it's kind of hard to accurately rank him, it's entirely dependent on your criteria. If you primiarily rank QBs on what their teams have won (shitty method btw) then you can just look at season results and rank that way. If you only rank by stats, again that's pretty cut and dry. If it's "we're playing one game and I have to pick 1 QB to lead us", I'd probably rank a good handful of QBs above him just because it's SUCH A different era and style than he was in. But if it's "what did they MEAN for the program / what was their overall IMPACT", I think you've still got to rank him pretty high up there. Richt was still a brand new HC when Greene was here and we were coming off the goff/donnan years and were basically seen on the level of about how Kentucky or ole miss is now. We were just fresh off a 9 game losing streak to UT and had only beaten UF once the prior decade. 3 losses in a row to tech. back and forth with AU. Never even won the division. So to ahve that stretch from 02 - 04 when we REALLY put our name back in the national discussion I don't think can be understated.

Ending the Vols run of wins puts him high on the list.

Their knoxville streak, hard to believe it'd been 20 years since we'd won there. Technically Quincy ended their 9-gamer on us the year before.

Shockley might have overtaken Greene in 2002 if he didn't break his foot in the USCjr game.

What a waste of great talent. He was so up or down and the admitted cocaine use at that time, told years later, explains a LOT.

it sure was. He was such a lighning rod his first year in '98 highlighted by that unbelieveable night in baton rouge. It looked like we really had somethign major at that point. And I don't think we'd had a true dual threat guy prior to him since the 80s. Then he jsut got worse and worse each year. Sad.

I don't really fault JoeT. It's not his fault that he was limited as a QB and it was never intended that he play all that much for us, and he didn't. As an underclassman he barely saw a snap at all. As a junior he played really damn well in a pinch against arkansas afer DJ went out hurt in an uncomfortably tight game, you can argue we do not win that game without Joe T's presence. Then the next week against UF our game plan was just really lousy and did not adjust to his skillset at all. Even still he made a very memorable gritty play to give us our only TD of the day.

Then as a senior he started the year only because he was a senior and to let Stafford get his feet wet before taking over which everyone knew would happen.

Was Joe T a great QB? No, but he wasn't expected to be nor did we ask him to be. He was no different than hundreds of other 2nd string caliber QBs that have played at big time schools.
