Practice Report Aug 8, 2019— Georgia freshman Travon Walker was expected to get his first reps with the ones on Thursday, an indication the 6-foot-5, 285-pounder from Thomaston is opening eyes.
Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning said on Monday that Walker’s athleticism stood out in the offseason workouts in shorts and helmets. “Travon is extremely athletic, is strong, he’s really an athletic guy for his size, “ Lanning said. “Obviously he has the basketball history as a high school player, so I’m definitely excited to see what he can do.”

Lanning and other defensive coaches covet players like Walker with an explosive burst off the line that is often compared to how basketball players explode to the rim.

— Freshman receiver George Pickens has moved up to the second team at receiver, and his size continues to stand out more than one might expect of someone listed at 6-3 on the roster. Pickens looked smooth and athletic running his routes, showing the sort of promise in drills that made him a 5-star recruit.

— Freshman slot Dominick Blaylock continued to work with the third team, unable to advance past redshirt freshman Kearis Jackson or challenge No. 1 slot Demetris Robertson. Jackson redshirted last season on account of a hamstring injury.

— Tyler Simmons is working ahead of Pickens and likely will continue to do so. Simmons is a reliable blocker and now healthy brings a great deal of speed and pass-catching ability to the perimeter. Simmons played more than half of last season in a shoulder brace.

— Junior defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt was blasting the sled in warmups, perhaps serving notice he was ready for whatever degree of scrimmage action the Bulldogs had scheduled. Going up against the ‘Great Wall’ on a daily basis certainly would require pep.

— Redshirt freshman John FitzPatrick had a drop, prompting tight ends coach Todd Hartley to encourage with him a “FitzMagic” reference. FitzPatrick, wearing some sort of elbow brace contraption, caught the next ball.

— Tennessee graduate transfer tight end Eli Wolf was sitting out Thursday’s practice on account of what was described as a minor injury.

Big Ben is an understatement

Also pleased at the Pickens update but I'm a little worried about Walker running with the 1's. I'm not sure if that's good news or bad news.

We need to just have an official pinned fall camp thread

Freshman 5* DT running with the 1’s can’t be a bad thing. A team beat Bama a few years ago with a freshman 5* DT starting on the Dline.

Walker with the 1s today is great. Means they’re giving him a shot and putting the other guys on notice. Davis was arguably our best FL last year as a TF. Just need to be physically ready and Walker is

We will see how things look after Saturday and the first big scrimmage

Thanks DawgRff - Been having difficulty staying on top of the practice reports. Still a little hectic since my dad has been out of the hospital and at home.

Stokes raving about Pickens in an interview today. Looks like we got a legit threat a WR now. Said he was a "one of a kind player"

Little more information from Red and Black.

Defense

Smart spent all 12 of the open minutes of practice working with the defensive backs.

The cornerbacks were working on combo coverages with the safeties. Eric Stokes and Tyson Campbell took the first-team reps at corner. Redshirt sophomore cornerback Ameer Speed made a nice play breaking up a corner route on the near side and got some extra attention from defensive backs coach Charlton Warren.

Presumed starters Richard LeCounte and J.R. Reed worked on the first team at safety, but Lewis Cine also received a few reps.

Offense

The quarterbacks and running backs worked on handoffs during the first half of the open period.

The QB/RB pairings were as expected with Fromm partnering with D’Andre Swift, Stetson Bennett with James Cook, and D’wan Mathis with Brian Herrien.

After the handoff drills, the quarterbacks split off with the tight ends to work short yardage routes. Fromm connected with Charlie Woerner on the first-team reps.

I hope Simmons has a big senior season, but I think the younger receivers catches him a few games in.

Good to hear no one getting injured, and actually getting healthier.

James Cook running second team, thank goodness. That dude is getting the damn ball this year, love it. I love Herrien but we need guys out there who actually scare defensive coordinators and Cook can be a TD anytime he touches the ball.

Last season, I mentioned that Cook reminds me of Sony his first year at UGA.

AJ is a big shadow to try to move out of. We'll find out in a couple of weeks which players will shine in the position.

We've seen our line, and they're pretty capable. If Walker is able to climb the depth chart, it can only be a good thing, IMO.

He reminds me of Keith Marshall before he got hurt. Similar builds and running styles.

I completely forgot about cook having all those runs. I seem to remember a “meh” season but in reality, it was pretty solid.

Cook with the right amount of bulk is going to be amazing. I saw he bulked up some so looking forward to seeing him run this year.
