FWIW, you guys should read the Stoics: Seneca, Epictetus, Aurelius, etc.

Thinking about death and mortality was a daily practice (Memento Mori). It was a way of harnessing that anxiety to do great things and keep everything in perspective. Made me feel better about the inevitable, TBH.

Chemical burns, and yes, twice.

1) Got the pleasure of seeing my own skin melt from lye burns (so yeah, that scene in Fight Club is always fun to watch). Bonus highlight - watching the ER doctor come in, his eyes widen, him say "Jesus Christ," then walk away for a few minutes to compose himself.

2) Was alone in the lab working on one of our devices when acetone sprayed out, splashed up under my safety glasses, and into my eyes. Pretty dramatic pain, plus all the fun of being blind and alone, stumbling around trying to find the damn eye wash station. Never used safety glasses (which were what we were issued) after that - always went with goggles.

You probably wouldn't want to read about how the cooks on the Lusitania died, then - trapped in a disabled elevator as the ship sank.

Car wreck somewhere on the metro area interstates because there’s so many a-holes in Atlanta blasting around with no regard for anyone’s safety, also the stupid amount of wrong way drivers we have. If someone ever hits me due to them speeding I will be in jail if I am able to walk away because I will beat the shite out of that person male or female until the cops pull me off. I drive around 200 miles per day on these roads

I got trapped in an elevator in Boston yesterday. It had always been one of my fears and I have to say it sucked. I was trapped for about 20 minutes before a building maintenance guy somehow freed me. I could hear Boston FD responding (could hear sirens) but maintenance dude got me out before the firefighters did.

I'm old enough to remember elevator operators. They would close this lattice like barrier and you could see the walls of the shaft. It was hit or miss if they asked you to step up or down.

I think the safety engineering at that time was a centrifugal "pawl" that would spin out if the cable broke.

Worst fear? Probably public speaking. Speaking in front of 10-15, no problem. Speaking and influencing, trying to sway and get "buy in" in front of hundreds was nerve wracking.

I know I'm replying to myself, but if anyone would like advice on public speaking, I have some insight.

I dont like Flying either. Its a control thing. I fly almost every week for work and I hate it... Turbulence no good. I am a white knuckler..

This is me now, yet when I was a kid my uncle was a corporate pilot. He would take me flying in private jets (mostly a Lear 35). He was killed in a plane crash in the eighties, ever since then I've been afraid of flying.

I used to be afraid of flying but now I get loaded and it's not so bad.

Nu, tell us your public speaking tips. Even if you get made fun of, it might help someone. It might even change someone's life.

It is about dealing with stressful situations. It is about doing something that you don't want to do.

Fear is real. How you react is poignant. You will never be proficient at public speaking until you do it and do it again and again. AND AGAIN.

One of the easiest aspect of public speaking, is informational or ceremonial. Every Eagle Scout in my troop could handle these situations with ease. They had to do this, most didn't want to.

The funny thing is, after they did it and did it again, AND AGAIN, they got good at it.

The first point I want to make is get experience with small inconsequential groups. Informational/ceremonial topics are easy, if you know what you are talking about.

Ever seen a Paternoster elevator? Those are a lot of fun. When I worked in Germany, our building had one - always want to make sure you got off by the top floor, or else....

re: OT. Worse Fear. Trapped in an elevator.
Another tip about public speaking.

MOVE AROUND.

UGA speech class, first day.

Professor: "Over the next few days, I will be calling on
individuals to come to the podium and
introduce/talk about yourself for a minimum of
5 minutes". "BTW, we will be videoing these for
class critique".
Me: Dammit! I recalled being assigned the role of Emcee
during an elementary school talent show. Standing
behind the podium on the school stage, it
started...beads of sweat, dry throat and shaking
hands. At intermission my kindly 6th grade teacher,
sensing my distress, suggested that I walk across the
stage before the next acts and extend my arm in a
sweeping motion, bow and exit stage right.

So here I am years later confined again behind the dais. I stumbled through with multiple "ums" recorded on videotape. It's a low point of my life.

Then life happens. You have to give presentations to be successful.

MOVE AROUND.

Powerpoint is great. You can MOVE with the remote, display comment and expound the salient points.

Interesting story about Ted Kennedy.

I met Joan Kennedy in AA in a meeting on Beacon Hill.
