About 8 months ago an old military friend was transient fleeing a warrant in Florida. I found him sleeping homeless in Savannah and put him up for a bit. About 2 months later he took off presumably arrested for meth or
Similar reasons and returned to face his Florida warrant also. He didn’t have much actual property but his motorcycle was left her with no instructions or any indication of when or how I should expect him to get it back.

What is the law exactly about how long before it becomes mine? I know I have to at least try to find him and inform him of it it’s locarion and ask him to retrieve it correct? Then after that as I understand it runs through department of revenue in which case they would find ownership is mine assuming the sufficient time required by law has passed and he hasn’t been found.

Can anyone advise?

Pretty sure you have to attempt to contact him multiple times per year for 5 years. You do have to file something with the DoR, but not exactly sure how often or when.

Someone showed me the unclaimed property site last year for Georgia. I didn't have anything, but my brother had a paycheck (he never picked up his last one after he quit) from where he worked in HS for $250 and was able to get it after a bit

ETA: Here is the unclaimed property site for GA
Anyone got something?

Thanks for trying to help. I saw the 5 year thing but I also believe there are exceptions and one includes incarceration for multiple crimes both felony and misdemeanor and out of state. From the limited amount of internet info I came across skimming getting ready for work some said 90 days was enough in that situation

I also don’t want to sound like I’m being callous about a man I served with. I am a psychiatrist so I don’t need the money in any important fashion, but I gave him everything I could to help him turn around his life even private in home addiction counseling free off my clock. So I just don’t want his bike sitting in garage for 7 years while he’s in prison for god knows what

If you know someone that manages rental homes, call them. They deal with crap left by deadbeats often. There are rules around this which I don’t recall. But certainly don’t recall anything like 5 yrs.

I’m sure you can call the DoR or email them

But wouldn’t they insist I provide a known location. All I know is incarcerated somewhere in the state of FL

Further since I get so much enjoyment from all the effort y’all put up here, and I make good money as a psychiatrist, if they will deed it mine I would donate it to a board member who might be struggling

Why'd you put Chef up in your house? You had to know that wasn't going to end well.

That's strong.

Good on you.

I dont do much. I will take a homeless person out to lunch when available. I like breaking bread with strangers and the homeless are the ones who could use a small win the most. It is crazy how often they are veterans and how often they are mentally unstable.

I only did it because 1) We served Kunar for 15 months together about 3 miles from the Pakistan border. I was barely 19 and looked up to him. So when I saw I chance to maybe turn him around, especially considering my field and how I could maybe be in a better position to help than most, I tried it. Ultimately though he was too deep into the drugs and a stable home with daily meals, clean clothes, I was getting him set up at the VA and with welfare. None of it was enough compared to meth and whatever else he was into I guess.

Pretty sure if his motorcycle is registered in FL then you would need to look into FL property law not GA.

His tag was there but hasn’t been active for 3 years so who knows what kind of common law would apply to where it technically should be registered

Spunky, that was funny as shite. I do miss his stories some times

td - you have done enough. here is the FL inmate search. If he is incarcerated, it will show where on this site
Good on you for trying with him and also for trying to track him down. Tell the sister to frick off...or frick her if shes hot
