But seriously.... there's really only three job markets around here. University/government, service industry, and the Caterpillar plant that is opening up. There is also some light agriculture in the area, mainly poultry.

There is more variety of employment options in Atlanta, but that's an hour 10 minutes minimum drive one way. Also, Lockheed would be a solid 2 hours, as it is on the opposite side of ATL.

You may just want to live on your pension and find something enjoyable you like to do around town like.... panhandling on Clayton or vandalizing bulldog statues.... will your wife work? What business is she in?

You've picked a great area for quality of life, but there really is shite for job market here, at least for middle class type jobs.

She's a Special Ed teacher with masters plus a masters in school admin so could go principal track. She's looking at UGA for employment too. I could get into the real estate gig with a friend in the area or look at starting a pub. There is also a new brewery coming to town. Done the music thing too. Been thinking about an indie record company with the same real estate friend. Maybe I should look at working with UGA too and give back to my alma mater. I hear the chicken express on hwy 15 is hiring.

Have they made an arrest yet in FPCA coaches murder case?

Yeah, that same guy has now also been charged for a different murder in McIntosh County.

Do not open a pub.

Real Estate market is saturated in the area.

Small breweries are difficult to sustain in Ga due to 3-tiered distribution law.

Plenty of need for special ed, but she is probably accustomed to yankee salary, the pay cut to move South should be considered.

It sounds like neither of you have spent much time in the private sector. It's rough around these parts.

I know they are trendy and there is a ton of them there. We could buy a failing one and turn it around. I have experience in the F&B biz prior to active duty.

Intersting. I wish the new one luck then.

Dude...we're in Louisiana. It would be a $10-12K/yr increase--trust me we've checked. Teachers earn squat here and it is pathetic. She taught in ND and it is on par with GA salaries.

True...would have to think outside the box. I love a challenge. Good thing I'll have that Sr officer retirement pay! Maybe I should look at a franchise of some sort or a high end cigar bar or shop. What does Athens "need" these days?

I could always check with CAT.

No, I need to keep all options on the table. I need to establish a relationship with someone who can help me transition. If they cover only Savannah area perhaps yes but if they cover the state and or can hand me off to someone in the greater Athens area even better.

Feedback here has been fun and highly appreciated. Appreciate all of it.

What does Athens need?

You could open a data center.

Tow truck company or taxi with a 15 minute guarantee. Every taxi or tow truck you ever call for outside of the standard Fri/Sat night downtown is at least an hour wait. Sometimes they don't even show up. You call back and they act like they never talked to you.

Also needed is another auto mechanic that offers courtesy rides to and from work / school, there is only one in town besides dealerships and they are overflowing with biz

Maybe I could combine all of that into one hub where a cab service/tow service/ASE certified mechs could provide it all from one location or an East Side/West Side split location to make logistics/coverage more efficient/timely. Hmmm...

Oh and found "The Cigar Shoppe" on line in Athens. Looks kick @$$ so kind of wipes that idea off the list. Rat farts!

Athens is eaten up with tobacconists. They even got a law changed so it's the only place inside the county line where you can smoke indoors.

But seriously on the taxi.... a friend of mine was on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and actually won around $20k and he bought a London Taxi cab from England and had it shipped here. He filled out all the paperwork and got his license to run the operation and was making bank for about a year, Friday and Saturday nights, everyone wanted to ride in the funny London Taxi with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. Needless to say, he's got lots of stories about that... and he didn't always take cash as payment. It turns out that to legally operate a taxi operation, you are required to operate 24/7/365 with a live dispatch. His hired dispatch fell alseep on the job one night and the bureaucrats busted him and it was the 3rd offense, pulled his license. That was the end of that.

seriously.... taxi cab company with a few ads in the local paper advertising a 15 minute guarantee. Hire mexicans to clean the puke out every Sat and Sun morning. When people tip you with weed, just stockpile it and pay the Mexicans with it.
