I don't see where you answered a 1st page question on whether or not the problem happens on multiple browsers.

I had just started the computer, ran the adsweeper thing, then ran the test. So I can try again when it is slow.

I have tried Chrome and Explorer, both slow, but Chrome is slower of the two.

At the moment, I have nothing open but the process explorer and it shows 2 pages of process, lots of small exe files. How can I do a screen capture to show.

Win7 should have snipping tool

Go to start menu, in the search box, type snipping tool.

You'll find alot of uses with it

Screen shot options galore

'Prt Scr' button on the top row of the keyboard, then CTRL-V (paste) into MS Paint or wherever.

Two more things: Go to browser options and try clearing the cache.

Also, click START -> Right click 'Computer' and go to 'Properties'. Please list RAM and processor speed.

Ok. Having issues getting the screen shot on here so manual, in order, the first several processes:

svchost 148000
chrome 49000
dwm.exe 107000
explorer 53000
chrome 56000
svchost 36000

in fact, chrome is on there 7 times on first page, svchost is on there 8 times on first page.

Others listed: spoolsv, procexp64, csrss.exe, searchindexer.exe, audiodg.exe, wmpnetwk.exe, whanext.exe, FBAgent.exe, taskhost.exe, zeroconfigservice.exe

Chrome extensions like AdBlockPLus will show up as an extra process. Should be normal

Looked up the .exe files. Most look fine. Did you mean wlanext.exe?

If so, I don't think you have any background nonsense fricking your shite up. So at least we can rule that out.

Worse than ever....I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome. Changed some default setting based on what I have learned. Now it is slower than ever, even giving me the no-can-do on pages every now and then. And it looks weird. For example when I type Secrant into Google, the HPPTS has the following after google...
/search?q=secrant?q=sedrant&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69860I2.1065j0j8&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8

WTF?

Google does all kinds of URL redirects on their search results, so they can monitor what users are doing and for various billing purposes. I turned off meta refresh on my IE browser, and links from a google search don't even work because of how google handles its links. If you use bing as a search engine you get direct links. Maybe try using bing as your default search engine and see if eliminates some intermediate pages.

I use bing and it works okay for me. But, I don't think changing the search engine would fix his speed problems anyway unless he has some kind of odd redirect virus. Was just suggesting a possible reason for the URL's he's getting with his google searches.

If you show 7 processes running for chrome and you don't have any browser windows open, that means chrome is running multiple background apps all the time, on top of any browser windows/tabs you might have open.

There's an easy way to see if those extra processes are slowing things down. In the chrome browser under settings >> Advanced Settings >> System, there's an option called "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". If you uncheck that, all the extra chrome processes should stop when you close all your chrome windows. Then you can try browsing using IE and see if it still runs slowly.

If you want to see exactly what chrome is running, look at the Chrome task manager, which is under the "more tools" menu.

I don't know what else to try. I will either have to take it to a Geek Squad and take a chance they can fix it, or get a new one and try to copy all my data over.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

If you had a bit more knowledge you could backup your data files and your bookmarks and passwords before doing a clean install of Windows 7.

My friends and family periodically screw up their machines and then bring them to me. I back everything up and then overwrite their boot drive before reformatting and reinstalling.

Before doing anything drastic or spending a lot of money you might consider trying to run your computer from a linux live CD to see if browsing is messed up with a known good OS. You can freely download Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon and then burn it to CD. Boot from the Linux CD and after the OS loads do some web browsing to see if you still have problems.

It's a shame that you don't have a technical friend handy nearby.

Yeah, I wish I did have someone nearby or who could do something via VPN. I found a place in Snellville that said that would look at it and give me an estimate before they do anything, so I guess I will run it by there.

I think we have determined that you need service and that wifi isn't the problem but have you at least tried a wired connection to you router?
