I'm sure this guy is great. My post is not meant to dis him. I know nothing of him or his restaurant.

But...

Beard awards are not what they once were. A few years back they started giving nominations and awards to women and minorities, nearly exclusively. To make up for all the years white men were the only ones.

Still prestigious. But an * in my book.

Edit to add: when white dudes get nominated these days, you know they are badass. This guy could be that. Or not.

The guy on the sidebar in that link, Joe P, was my realtor when I tried to buy my first house in Athens. Nice affable guy, always on time, returned calls and emails quickly, but the deal fell through because the sellers decided they didn't want to sell anymore, they just wanted to rent it out.

Is it rare to get nominated when the establishment has only been open for under 2 years?

It's got 78 Google reviews and an average of 4.1 stars. Seems sus

Or maybe I'm just a hater. Congrats Pete

These awards are for the chef, not the restaurant. It's not all that rare for a chef to get awards quickly at new places. Many times a fresh start or different cuisine is what gets them the nom.

These awards are not given to the best anymore. It's sad. Maybe they never were. Most of the nominees have highly paid big PR firms behind them.

Connections, you dig?

I looked up their restaurant, it's a Thai noodle shop in the hipster warehouse district. Lame.

I'll admit I went into hater mode once I read his expose. Dude went to Madison County High School yet has a "partner" and a dog named papaya.

Sounds like he should have been bullied harder.

Makes sense with his dad being a chef too.

Give us more retooc lore...were you in the culinary biz?

I opened a restaurant with a 2 time Beard semi finalist. I was his GM for a year before I moved to FL. Worked with him for about 7 years total.

Dean Neff, Georgia graduate. Worked with Hugh Acheson at 5 and 10. His brother was a founding member of a well known Athens band and continues to play and record music in Athens.

He is a great chef. I know a good bit about the high end dining scene.

As soon as I read his last name I assumed he was a minority and it's unfortunate because he may very well be amazing and worthy.

But the stance the JBF has taken cheapens it for me.

Once his bio was posted I just laughed.

Very cool man! I bet that was a rewarding job, but I know you probably don't miss those hours. Is the restaurant biz as crazy when you're at the GM level as far as working hours and what not?

Opening a restaurant is absolutely balls to the wall for the GM.

Once you have a great process in place and the right ppl around you it's easier and the GM rarely is at the restaurant after 4 or 5.

Dean got his 3rd semi final nomination this week.

First time for outstanding chef nationally. Other 2 were for best chef southeast. He's the real deal.

The guy who runs Miller Union near Tech, Steven Satterfield, is a HS classmate of mine from Savannah. He’s a multi-time JB nominee.

I've met him a few times. Have his cooking veggies through the seasons cook book.

Great dude. Fun to work with. Started having drinks around the 3rd course of a 5 course meal we did with him many years ago.
