The Kirby era began..
I think we all had a good idea that we'd return to being a better team than we were in some of the later Richt years, but not sure anyone knew just how high the highs (and how incredibly infrequent the lows) would be over the next decade.

pretty crazy game too, all things considered.
-Lambert played most of the game but everyone knew it'd be a 2006 JoeT/Staff situation where it was only a matter of time before the baton was passed for good.
-We were very depleted talent wise, overall. Had a Rhode Island transfer at Left tackle and playing maybe our best OL (a natural tackle) at guard because we had no one else. Probably multiple other good examples I can't remember
-UNC had mitch trubisky and elijah hood, that was a sneaky good team with larry fedora at coach
-2016 was the last year of the GA dome
-We held a slim halftime lead, then UNC returned the opening KO for a td adn then scored another TD to go up double digits
-We follow up with a TD, safety, and FG to take a small lead. Then chubb breaks a long one to ice it away
-Chubb with 222 yards which is 9th most in a game in our history
still unreal how good chubb was in that game considering how devastating his injury was 10 months prior

If the NIL and transfer portal hadn’t blown up like it did I have no doubt we’d be stacked like peak Bama during their run.
Regardless, the back to back nattys were something it was amazing to see and be a part of as a fan.

Lambert is a damn good dawg to me for the complete beat down he put on Spurrier..... that alone gives him legend status to me.... the old ball sack quit shortly after..... Lambert, an otherwise below average QB, beat the ever loving piss out of him and like Kirby says, made his arse quit. Legend.

All time NCAA record for completion percentage in that game. I forget the exact stat, but not a single ball he threw touched the ground that day, as I recall.

Close losses to Tennessee, Vandy, and Ga. Tech (all at home) were very tough to take. I let everyone know before the 2016 season started that I was giving Kirby a pass. After 2016, he didn't disappoint.

yep. Kinda crazy that as bad as that season was, and we really were not a good football team, they were a smidgen away from being 10-2.
We still would've lost the east on a tiebreaker to UF, but the SECC would've given them their 4th loss. Looking at the standings we probably would've been hovering around the top 10 and gotten the SEC's 2nd best bowl slot. Wild.

Lambert was 24/25 with 20 consecutive completions. 96%
330 yards and 3 TD's.
