After the 1980 NC, Auburn offered Dooley their HC job. Dooley told Erk if he took it he would recommend him for the Georgia HC job. Vince ultimately decided to stay and said he would coach at Georgia for the rest of his career. Erk knew he would be too old by the time Vince retired so he looked for an HC job. Georgia Southern asked him to come restart their program and he went. The rest is history.
