Just what I was afraid of .. He had a great career with the Dawgs ... wish him the best in the NFL.

that's really a gut punch. With almost anyone else you could kinda downplay it, even with Jalen being out we had enough dudes that we could plug in his place. There really isn't a replacement for nolan considering the dropoff after him.

We can still go 12-0 without him I believe, but it's going to really hurt when we play in the SECCG not having him. I guess now I really, really hope someone other than alabama wins the west to make it easier on our defense.

That sucks. Florida moved the ball much better when he was out.

Guess "replacing" him will be done by multiple players ..
Beal, Mykel and Chambliss are the ones that I can think of at the moment.

Beal has made some big plays in the past. I think he will be ready.

Anybody got word on Darris Smith? He was supposedly coming on, but got hurt against UF too. Chaz has the hammy issue, not great

Not sure - haven't heard a word other than what the announcers said when he went in the tent

Absolutely brutal... No rationalizing this one. He is a solid player and a leader of that defense, and the defense will feel his absence.

Yep. Still not sure of who will take his place. If Chambliss has the hamstring issue, then who's next? Was Chambliss the best we have?

Nolan out and Chaz dealing with a hammy is not good. Whos next man up? MJ Sherman and former 5* Marvin Jones Jr 6'5 250? I believe I heard somewhere that Marvin Jones Jr missed the Florida game because of an illness. I hope he is healthy now.

It sucks, but we have 4 and 5 stars behind him. That’s why we recruit in the top 3-4. We don’t have to worry about these things as much as most teams.

I agree.

The problem is that Nolan provided a guy who should be in the NFL playing on Saturdays.

If a team lines up tight and throws quick screens wide, Nolan reads/reacts and cleans up the play when pushed inside.

If a team lines up tight ends wide and throws wide, Nolan sticks the block and helps the defense win the play.

Nolan is a "do everything guy" (control the edge, stunt effectively, run the hoop, drop back).

Playing a quickfire team, we need OLBs to step up. It ain't easy.

Plus, Nolan is the vocal leader, not only on the defensive side, but for the entire team. No doubt that he'll be on the sideline supporting everyone. But that's not quite the same as being on the field, getting bloodied, battered and bruised with your teammates. Big loss in many ways.

I agree. But Nolan has coached up Pop for 8 games. JDJ is even more animated the past couple of games presnap.
Chris Smith has experience for the third level. Nolan's biggest influence has been getting the rest of the linebackers to this point. I think we will be good from a leadership standpoint on defense. We are missing a guy who rarely misread a play (presnap/postsnap) for his position.

If we roll Mykel out, who do you want in the other 4i to 5 tech spot?

I agree that mykel may be able to hold the edge and may be able to flip his hips and get the outside screen game (I don't expect him to handle wheels like nolan). But the question is who fills Mykel's spot if he slides over?

If MJJ is healthy from the flu, I think we see a lot of him. We need a spark. I don’t think Chaz can play too much or he’ll get picked on in the run game. If Sherman can’t get in over Chaz with a tweaked hammy, idk what he’ll ever do unfortunately. MJJ is the most ready of the younger guys.

Mykel needs to keep his hand in the dirt. Great athlete but if we have to audible a coverage, I do not want him covering a rb or te.

If he's the reason we lose a game then our depth isn't as good as advertised.

Yes losing Nolan hurts, but thinking losing him is gonna be our downfall is a little silly and fatalistic.

Unfortunately, he was one of, if not the only, irreplaceable players on the team.

Yep, I have a bad feeling about the Tennessee game.
Tennessee's OL has been creating a wall around Hooker and I don't think we are going to be able to get pressure on him, in which case he's going to have a field day with our depleted secondary and without Nolan Smith at LB.
