Should Nagorno-Karabakh be recognized as an independent state or is it just a ploy for Armenia to have its own puppet state on Azerbaijani soil?

Most parties agree that the Nagorno-Karabakh people should decide their own future, and everyone keeps agreeing there should be a referendum but the catch is that it's technically and officially Azerbaijan soil, so it would be an Azerbaijan election, which the Armenians won't agree to.

It's like they have to be declared a state in order to have an election to decide whether or not they want to be a separate state.

Monteg, do you think there is something else going on with all this? Why did Donald Rumsfeld spend so much time on this prior to 9/11? There's less than 150,000 people there and little oil. In their 2005 census, only 6 respondents identified themselves as Azerbaijani.

6 people.

Something doesn't add up.

This looks like a really fun thing to do, so long as you don't get murdered by Apostolic Caucasians.

Is the Appalachian Trail dotted with 3rd century monastic ruins and such?

If you drop enough acid, anything is possible.

This explains a little more.

The bastards have been trying to build a pipeline since the end of the cold war, to deliver oil from the land-locked Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean, bypassing the god damn Russians, starting in Azerbaijan.

Problem was with Azerbaijan's problem with Armenia... they were in an active war over Nagorno-Karabakh, and the pipeline could never have been constructed cooperatively between them.

So right around the year 2000 they found a way to take the pipeline through Georgia, then down into Turkey to the Med Sea, bypassing Armenia.

And it was right around then that people stopped giving a shite about Nagorno-Karabakh's struggle.

Even when it's not about oil, monteg, it's still about the god damn oil.

If they have the ability and strength of force to wrestle away some territory and form their own state...without military or financial assistance from outside interests then by all means thy should have their own state.

If it involves big brother nations to step in and assist...then they should be squashed and the world should go about it business.

BTW, this is a canned response as I know nothing about Armenian politics.

It already was its own country, until the Soviet Union took them over in the 1910's and took it upon themselves to combine Azerbaijan and the NK and allowed them to be "The Muslim Soviet State" even though NK is 99% Christian.

In the early 90's when the USSR fell, NK technically and officially declared their independence before Azerbaijan did.

ETA - Geographically larger than Cobb County but with the population of Clarke County. Therefore nobody give a frick. Not since they got the oil pipeline figured out and bypassed.

Maybe we shouldn't be looking at what they were up to 20 years ago.... maybe we need to be looking at what they are up to 20 years from now...
